I have been screw balling around the gun boards for several years. I am even a moderator of a shotgun board on
www.xxxx.com. But at last I have arrived! Someone wants to talk about the rifles I hunt with. No, not black rifles! And no, no, no, boring bolt action rifles! And God forbid a single shot rifle! There is a special place in hell for those people. But then again there are using a gun with one shot. They are already in hell!
No I want to talk about the Remington 7400/7600 family!
I hunted with a 742 in 30-06 for over 20+ years untill I wore out the rails. About 5-6 years ago Remington did a trade in program and I got a new 7400 in 30-06. The 742 took almost 40 deer in those years and the 7400 has several deer and a pig to its credit so far. I bought the gloss finish, yes I like it, and topped it with a Nikon 3X9 and Warn removable mounts. The 7400 even shoots better than the 742. Took the pig at 145 yards!
Now I have been lusting after a 7600 for years. I even put a deposit on a 760 many, many years ago in 35 Remington. But I had the 742 and money was tight so I had to let it go. I had narrowed it down to a carbine in 30-06 or a rifle in 270. Well this fall I was surfing the boards and heard about this special run from Grices on the 7600 in 35 Whelen. Well I called right away but was told I was too late they were gone but that the 7600 carbine was available in 35 Remington. Well that sounded good so I bought one and my dealer took care of the paper work and so on.
Well the rifle shoots great. I am pleased as punch but was still upset abouit missing the Whelen so I sent off a nasty gram to Remington asking that they send out e-mails notifying people about these special runs. Well late December I get a e-mail from Remington and it has all of the special runs they did last year and who the dealers were who had them. Well Grices had said that the Whelens were gone but I used the hot link Remington supplied and wrote a e-mail to Grices asking if they would do the Whelens again. Well guess what! They had one more left! It was not taken by a dealer who had ordered it. So right now it sits in my dealers stock room with a 200 dollar deposit on it waiting funds. I should be finished paying by March. The Whelen like the 35 Rem cames to just over 500 bucks with the shipping ect...
So here are the questions. Is there a better way to mount a sling on the 7600 without using that barrel band? If not which barrel band set is better? How about peep sights on the carbine? Like the family in Vermont uses? Or should I use a scope. The new Rifleman series of scopes from Leopold look interesting, anyone try one? And don't forget mounts. What about factory ammo for the Whelen, 200 or 250 grain Remington or 225 grain Federal? I am using the 200 Remington for the carbine, shoots great with open sights.
Well enough for now. I have to go to work. I bored the hell out of everyone on the other board with my obsession with Remington 870's and 1100's. Time to start working on you guys! MIKE.
