New Trail Cam Pic
« on: March 17, 2012, 06:40:21 AM »
Got permission to hunt 50 acres that is a few miles from my home. Owner and his neighbors have seen hogs in this area. I soured some corn and put it out and at the same time set up a new trail cam I purchased. Besides the usual crows, coons, possums and squirrel pics I got four pics of this one. This is the best pic as the others are in the distance.

THAT right there is a Mammoth boar.  Good luck getting him.

Adjust your Trail Camera UP from the bottom another 1/4 inch and you will be putting most of the IR radiation on the subject rather than the foreground...I think.

Thanks, I'll adjust it next trip. I'm thinking that he might be the one that a neighbor close to the hunting land saw in his field from a distance and thought it was one of his calves. I want to see him up close if I get a chance to body slam him. If his tusks are good I would do a mount on this one.

In your picture, the place to shoot that guy is right in the light gray area behind and just below the ear...if you are close enough and he stands still long enough.

I like these little $130.00 Moultrie Cameras.  They have quite a depth of field, wide range, and cast a lot of IR long distances at night for fairly clear pictures.  Their drawback is a slow shutter speed that does blur a moving target.  My hunting partner bought one and installed it on the back end of my place.  It takes very nice color photos in the daylight too:

Lots of hogs in your picture. You're right on all counts about the trail cam. I had some beautiful color daytime pics and some blurry ones where a coon or possum was scooting by. I'll be buying another one of these Moultries from the Ebay store this one came from. $74.95 shipped. I think the store had over 400 of them. I'll be moving them down to my deer hunting land about September or October to try and pattern some nice bucks we know are there. So far they've been smarter than us.

Little footballs we call those.  Good eating if Mom or Dad fails to appear.  I like your price better than Dave's.  If you don't mind, PM me with a link to the 400 unit seller and I will inquire about purchasing a few more.  I discovered a .44 Russian cartridge on my land today that is not over a week old.  NO ONE shoots .44 Russian in my group.  My son had 5 guys there one week ago on Saturday.  I am asking him if one of them shot the Russian.  If so, no worries.  If not, then I have a Poacher and possible Thief (again).

Turns out my Fernandina Beach hunting buddy, 45-70.gov, from right here on GBO shoots the .44 Russian.  He is neither Poacher nor Thief.  It was his hand load that was lost in January 2012 and a new out of the box round that was in nearly pristine condition after more than two months in contact with the elements and the ground.  I will return it to him in late March when I visit again to see how he is progressing after his early March open heart surgery (ouch!).

Good deal. No bad guys on your land and hopefully 45-70.gov is recuperating and getting back on track. By the way, I was mistaken about the number of trailcams the seller had. They're down to 4 or 5 now. I must have been thinking of another seller.

He loaded them down quite a bit to be "quiet" while shooting at night with lights over the feeder.  Turned out that particular Friday night, everybody but Tim and Beth were shooting up the woods in all directions all around them with "artillery" and they shot NOTHING.  After that, he went for the 45-70 and didn't shoot with that rifle the next night either!!!

Been three weeks since I've had time to go back and download the pics from my trailcam. Got by there today and found out that the place has been busy but all at night. Had a lot more of one rooting in a hole that had corn in it but these were the best.

That camera is mounted practically "on the ground", which tends to make the animals look bigger than they are.  I am now thinking these are in the 150-200 pound class.

And a very slight upward adjustment, maybe stick a smallish wedge between the camera bottom and the tree, will raise the flash just a tad.

Trailcam is about 2 feet off the ground. After your last suggestion I put about a 1/4 inch shim behind the bottom end to lift the angle a bit. One of the holes I dug with the posthole diggers is now about the size of the hood on my jeep. I have a pile of pics of one digging in it. Would really like to get the boar, he's got some good cutters on him. Make a good mount and a pile of sausage.

Since they are coming at night, any chance your Game and Fish Department would offer/allow a Gun and Light permit for night hunting nusiance animals (pigs in this case)?  Do you have any food plots that are being abused?

No food plots on this piece of land. I'll give the noisy feeder thing a try that you mentioned in the other thread. I've got time to install it and let it run a while until the next full moon. Then I'll have the best of both worlds as it's open enough for a moonlight night with good optics.

A friend and I went back over there today and put up a very noisy feeder. Lots of sign where they had been back and did a lot of rooting. Also put up a small motor oil soaked rug on a nearby tree to get them in to do some rubbing. Forgot to take the trailcam back but will do that tomorrow on the way home from work. Plans are to see if they start coming before dark as the feeder is set for around 5:00 PM and if not then we'll hit them on the next full moon. Hopefully will have some more pics in a week or so.

I am not "sold" on the concept of motor oil bringing them in.  If they "are what they eat" then I don't want ANY that are attracted to motor oil.  Others say diesel fuel.  Were that the case, they should have eaten all of the lines on my tractor, which is situated on the property most days.  They have not.  Based on a statistically insignificant population of one property, observed over 20-years, I would say they don't like diesel or motor oil...it might have an adverse effect though, like keeping them away or keeping them nocturnal.

Several of the hunters in this area, including a friend that guides for deer, turkey and hogs, told me that they'll rub on it to get parasites off. The guide buys the tubular cattle rubs and soaks them in used motor oil then hangs them close to his hog stands. Works for him so I thought I'd give it a try. Put the trailcam back up this afternoon. I'll check it this coming weekend and see what went on.
