Value of S&W model 57
« on: March 17, 2012, 03:06:33 PM »
My buddy has a S&W model 57 41 mag stainless. Appears to be about a 6 inch barrel he is thinking of selling but does not know what it is worth.  I don't know the value myself. Any help on a fair asking price would be appreciated.  Thanks.
The gun is in good condition.

I just sold a 657 for 650.00. If yours is an actual stainless 57 it would be unusual. I have seen 2, but most are nickel. I don't know the story on a stainless 57.

These seem to go up in value daily? Just determine what it's worth to you to own, thsn make an offer.

I doubt there was ever a stainless 57? The S&W bible doesn't mention them?

After a few more questions for my buddy I found out it is a 57-1. Does this change the value at all?
Thanks again for all the replies.

That 57-1 gun is probably not a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder bore model, which is less desirable from a collector's point of view.

I have a 57-1 and even though it's not a P&R gun, it's still quite a decent representation of the S&W gunmaker's art.

Just what is a recessed cylinder bore model, anyway? Pinned and recessed, I understand.

Recessed is a short term for the cylinder is counter-bored for the rim of the cartridge, so the cartridge rim is fully enclosed, or sitting down flush with the cylinder.

The 41mag round is awesome to shoot and the N frame S&W handles it with ease.  I have the m57 w/6 1/2" barrel and the M58 w/4 " barrel.   I just shot the m58 / 4" barrel and she handles great.  I really like the 41mag round.   I have no clue as to why its been so over looked.

At the S&W sight it says 6 1/2" but its actually 6" sorry for the mix up.  I may have gotten mixed up too looking at so many new ones.
The new M57 in 41mag list for around $1,000.  I think a used one would be around $600.  My dealer just had these lastyear brand new M57  4" or 6" and M58 4" for $699 each in nickel.. Gotta love that S&W nickel finish,.

I really can't see paying much over $600 for a M57---I like the .41 a lot and it should work near enough to a .44 that it would not make enoght difference. I can handle the .41 mag a lot better than .44.
I paid less than $550 for mine about a year ago----though it does have worm hole porting done by someone who knew what they were doing in the porting department.
That story has a long arguement----I still swear I remember some maker offering this type porting---don't argue with an old man, it aint nice---just say yessir and go away shaking your head if you must---just don't argue and DO go away. ;)

Bill, I agree with the part about handling the .41 a lot easier than the .44. I recently loaded some 260 grain bullets over some Unique that worked quite well. Recoil was mild to say the least.
