Need advice on gun sight
« on: March 17, 2012, 09:00:52 PM »
I need to replace the rear sight on my Savage 24 in .410/.22 WMR. I would like something a little more accurate than a standard ramp or buckhorn style sight but I don't want to drill and tap the receiver for a receiver sight. I mostly use this gun for squirrel hunting. What would be a good option that would work well for both accurate head shots with the .22 but still allow me to use the .410? The gun also has a dovetail scope mount on the top barrel like most rimfires do but I prefere to use iron sights on this gun.
Thanks, Mike

I used a "clip-on" peep sight - a vintage redfield RE-24 especially made for the Savage/Stevens, and  different than the Redfield RE-22.

Failing sourcing a Redfield, another/newer/larger clip-on peep coulld be used, like a WGRS-54 - or talk to Andy @ the Skinner Sight section here - his new grooved RF peep sight might fit, or be fitted.

Whatever is use, most likely the low/issue front sight blade will either need to be built up higher, or replaced with a higher sight, to zero the rifle bbl.

Another idea, a little complicated, is this.   Does somebody make a weaver -style base mount, that clamps onto the receiver groove instead of having to be held down with screws?  Check Brownells.

If so, then once a short weaver base is installed, I'm pretty sure that somebody makes a high grade peep sight, that clamps right down into a weaver base.  Again, check Brownell's.  I think NECG makes one.

Of course, you would have to put a pretty tall front sight on the rifle to match up with the peep sight, but it might be a good result.

And, also, the cost of the base plus NECG sight may be more than the original cost of the rifle.  But, it would probably be cheaper that the cost of full scope mounts, rings, and a high quality scope.

Williams makes a receiver sight that clamps to the grooves of a 22 receiver. It's adjustments require a coin and aren't easily move out af zero and in general they works well.. check the Brownells websight..

Check out the screw size of the holes that are there, you might be able to get a Skinner Lo-profile sight to work.  ;)  Very clean set-up, but you'd have to drift adjust the front to zero.

Brownells lists several options for peep type sights that clamp to the grooves..all seem about the same price..check their website..

FYI - There are NO d/t'd holes atop the bbl of the OP's gun - a Savage 24 O/U rifle/shotgun.
