Was the 1992 Deer season. I drew a doe only tag. The Coyote, seen by my hunting partner crossed the corner from woods through winter wheat to woods again and scared up five does.
They circled too wide for him to get a shot off but traveled a couple hundred yards and down a hill side right into my lap.

I took the lead doe at around 35yds with the .50 cal and she went down in her tracks. The Other Four Deer Immediatley Layed Down!!!!!!!!!
They stayed down for 1 to 2 min, got up & milled around abit, then took off.

By that time they were getting a good whiff of the arcid blackpowder & probably the blood from the leader.

That .50 cal w/80gr FFG is pretty loud. Sounds like an acre of woods detonating when it is shot. And this time it had the hillside reverberating the shot.
Only thing I can figure is that the four remaining deer had no idea where the shot had come from and thought the lead doe had chose to hide!

The Coyote? got him three days later

Your right about the echo of the shot they had no clue what direction you were in?  I made a shot once on a mountain ridge near the top with my 338win. mag. and I'm sure the whole town in Vermont heard it and it echoed so bad and loud too.   I understand why the deer laid down.  It echoes from all sides??                                          BigBill

Bill,
I'm begining to figure it out now   You owe me a couple of windows, I thought they got broken from a jet going over and the sonic boom broke them :)  Leave that canon there in Conn. us poor folks up here can't afford to be replacing windows all the time. :(
Blow a vintage Circe dinner bell and they will come...

Sorry, I have one old farmer tell me there is no elephant up here to carry a gun that big??  I told him I ain't built for running nor speed??  BigBill

What worries me is the flatlanders who come up here and wound bears and let them go??  If their pissed and they run into me??  I've had it happen a few times that hunters can't find the bears they shot??  Also with the 338 I never had to look once for what we shot too it just drops where I hit it.  I've had some very close encounters with bears(350+lbs) and the 338 gives me the edge??  Either his head is going to be over my mantle or mine over his? (kidding)
