It has a recoil pad, it was inadvertently cropped in the pic.
Recoil isn't that bad, even off the bench. I am not hot rodding the smokeless MZ, I am shooting in velocity ranges that can be obtained with BP substitutes powders, I just don't have to clean the barrel when I am done at the range.
The other advantages to smokeless are it is much cheaper to shoot than BP substitutes and there isn't much of a velocity penalty with a short barrel so you have a lighter gun to hunt with.
FWIW, it is possible to shorten a H&R factory ramrod for a 18 3/8" barrel and it will still be collapsible and work just fine. Ya just got to know were to cut.

Just curious, would a stock with a recoil pad would have been a better choice?
