I have only about 8 rounds out of it as a smokeless MZ, but it shot fine as a shorty 45-70.  I did put three rounds in about 1.5" group @ 100 yards.  These where my plinking bullets, 204 grain LSWC @ .401" over 55+ grains of I3031.  No chrony yet.   My hunting bullet is a 279 grain LFN sized @ .401" over 52+ grains of I3031.  I only launched one of the 279s and with a warm barrel at 100 yards and it struck perfect left to right and about 2" below the 204 LSWCs, so it is showing promise.

BB,

That's a nice looking gun, best of luck with it.

Just curious, would a stock with a recoil pad would have been a better choice?
Does she kick uncomfortably hard?

OSR,

It has a recoil pad, it was inadvertently cropped in the pic. :-[    Recoil isn't that bad, even off the bench.  I am not hot rodding the smokeless MZ, I am shooting in velocity ranges that can be obtained with BP substitutes powders, I just don't have to clean the barrel when I am done at the range. ;)  The other advantages to smokeless are it is much cheaper to shoot than BP substitutes and there isn't much of a velocity penalty with a short barrel so you have a lighter gun to hunt with.

FWIW, it is possible to shorten a H&R factory ramrod for a 18 3/8" barrel and it will still be collapsible and work just fine.  Ya just got to know were to cut. ;D

Ok, enlighten me.  Who is doing this conversion and would this be legal for il?  What is all involved in the conversion?

Jason,

I will setup my chrony in the next couple of weeks shoot my 18 3/8" and 22" smokeless with the same loads and see what the velocity penality is on the shorter barrel.   My guess is with the relatively large bore of a 45 cal rifle the velocity penality will not be that much.  If one was shooting faster powders the velocity difference would be further minimized.

Matt
Smokeless Muzzleloading Inc. will do a conversion on a 45-70 or 450 Marlin barrel.  Search this forum and there is a thread on this posted a couple of months back.  There are others also making this conversion.  My two smokeless MZs I did myself but I am not a gunsmith and don't play one on TV so I only work for myself.

Gun is legal for deer where I hunt, unsure about the regulations of other states.
