22mag short?

A freind and I were plinking with our 22's today and he was using just a old tin of mixed 22lr ammo. He went to load a couple and they wuldn't chamber so he showed the ammo to me. The outside case diameter looks and is the same size as a 22magnum but it's the same length as a 22lr round. I'll get a pic up soon. I've been a bulllet head all my life and have never run into one of these anyone have an idea?

The round is a 22 Winchester Rimfire (WRF) or a 22 Remington Special. It uses an inside-lubricated bullet like the 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire. Or it could be a 22 Winchester Automatic. It also uses an inside-lubricated bullet.

There was also a full auto rifle with a Drum mag like a Lewis gun that used a 22 Mag case cut to 22 LR.
The wax from the 22LR gummed up the full auto gun.
and they made a short mag.
22 WRF is the same as a 22 Mag just not hot.

Hello, simplicity, I'm betting it's the .22 Auto ctg.  a .22 WRF or sometimes termed the "special" would chamber..thou be a bit short.

My grandfather had a Model '03 Winchester in .22 Auto (later Winchester modified that design to take the .22LR, renaming the new .22LR the M63).
 
My guess the mystery round is indeed the .22 Auto, too.
