hand reaming for choke tubes and forcing cone
« on: March 21, 2012, 01:56:46 PM »
have any of you rented the reamer/tap for choke tubes or forcing cone reamer from 4D or another source and done these jobs by hand or another method without a lathe? Really want to try this but am worried about not being able to get it done.

An Old Fashioned Brace and bit works well for this project.Just be sure and NOT stop the handle in the same position or you will get chatter marks. Also be very liberal with the cutting oil.
Good Luck

ok  froghunter i read your thread looks very cool, but did you ream all those barrels by hand with tap wrench, brace and bit set up, cordless drill ? or did you put them on a lathe?

cuda,

call or email Fred at 4D and ask his opinion on using these reamers by hand.

Yes.....By hand with a cresent wrench and a lot of oil. The forcing cone reamer has a close to bore size bushing at the bore end. The reamer I used for the choke removal was adjustable and I used it in steps to remove a little at a time and then mic'ed it. It was not hard to do or take long to do. H&R barrel metal is soft.
