Sorry to hear about the loss.
Since a firearm I once owned was used in a robbery in Dallas and later traced back to me via FBI records I am a supporter of keeping full records for every purchase and sale. I was never charged, nor do I think I was a suspect, but the months of waiting weighed heavy on my mind while the gun was traced to the person who used it.
I now have a record of every firearm I own by make, model, caliber, serial number and any special adds to the gun (Scope, laser grips, ivory grips, etc.), I also have photos to aid in the identification. In addition, new purchases are recorded as to where and when they were purchased as well as purchase price. I have a computer copy, a hard copy stored in my safe deposit box and a sealed envelope at my son’s house in his safe.
I know from experience, the quicker you can provide the information the better the chance the thief will be caught and the firearms recovered. Sad but recovered firearms are almost always defaced or damaged in some manner, but at least you have them back
