Where have the pigeon's gone?

For some reason it occured to me several weeks ago, that there were no pigeons around anymore.  They were bordering on a pestilence for a while, but for some reason, they are no more.  Our little town used to be covered in them....couldn't spot a one.  Nearby Columbus, Ga....not a one could I find.
 
How about your area? 
 
Just curious.....seems odd they would just disappear...

I think the crows ate them. I have never seen so many crows in my life, even downtown.

I saw a lot in D.C. earlier this week. Probably very few predators or shooters there.  We always had them in our hay barns in NW Arkansas but urban sprawl has removed most of the barns so I don't see many there anymore.

I think I found your pigeons!
Every afternoon I take a walk here in Aurora, Colorado and there are three to four big flocks that like to take a afternoon flight before they all come back to roost in various places in these neighborhoods! These are large flocks! Of course no hunting in the "hood"!! >:( >:(

 :)  Howdy! There seemed to be plenty around in Texas when I was a kid. In Texas, pigeons are called "feral rock doves" and they can be shot and nests destroyed at will anytime. There are still people that raise them. I have a cousin that raised them for a while. Always, Gene

Ben, do you have any peregrine falcons around??  other than that, check the old kroger parking lot up in Lake City.
I think ospreys kill them too.

Downtown Montgomery and Birmingham Alabama. Lots of pigeons, pigeon poop and oh yeah, city slicker crows.

Bridges--check all the bridges in your area, that's where pigeons live.  We've got a lot of bridges.  They also are very partial to grain facilities.  We've got some major grain exporting facilities too.

We have never had a large amount of pigeons in this area. There seems to be about the same number now as in the past. There are a few, about a half dozen, that come by during the day to have lunch from the milo I put out for the quail.

Where you at PowPow? I too have noted a huge increase in crows in this area for a number of years now. They are particularly noticable in the metro areas where they have never been before! ???

Pigeons don' seem too have diminished in number though.

Hereabouts, every business had trouble with pigeons, and some even had bb guns around and folks would shoot every one they could.  Thousands of them.  In the last few weeks I've looked for them, haven't found a one.
 
I'm not fond of them, it's just a point of curiosity.
 
Yes, we have some peregrines about, and a lot of hawks, but they would have had to eat about ten thousand pigeons each to get rid of all these.....

In Montgomery about 1962, the pigeons got so bad that they had a shoot downtown on a Saturday.
You could shoot pigeons with shotguns that morning from the rooftops of office buildings.
Knew some old power company guys who shot that day from the roof of the original Alabama Power building on Dexter.
They said there were hundreds of folks out that day.
 
Heard about a guy in Gadsden a few years ago who said he and a friend had a contract with the city to kill pigeons downtown. They would go at night with pellet guns, see the heads sticking out of the rain gutters where they were roosting and shoot into the gutter. At the next big rain, water would pour out of the pellet holes in the gutters.

They came west, we have plenty of banded pigeons. Its amazing a bird so stupid is so prolific. They are dumber than chickens. Crows are smart, very smart. I blast a crow about once a year and they remember to stay away for quite a while. Pigeons keep coming. I switched to a BB gun because the local cats are getting fat & lazy.

We had clouds of pigeons at the railroad because when you hump a string of bottom-dump hopper cars they leak grain, even empties. Sometime in the mid-60s Roseville had a pigeon shoot. Didn't work. Lots of fun tho.

Thats something I have never seen, a flock of pigeons. I believe blackbirds have taken over in Lou. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

When I was a kid there were a good many pigeons around, and pigeons were some of my first wing shooting practice. Now it is rare to see any pigeons around here. I guess they all moved into the cities, because that is the only place I see them anymore.
  Speaking of crows, I believe they are one of the most intelligent, if not the most intelligent birds there are. Anyone that hunts them knows this. Many people have the perception that they are stupid birds.
Once I went crow hunting with a couple friends. One of them never had hunted crows much, and I and him had an argument where we were going to set up. He insisted that we set in this down sloping field with a tree line about 30-40 yards away. I finally gave into his desires to set in the field. I did guarantee him that we would not fire one shot at a crow stetting where he wanted to. The field had some small crabapple trees scattered about, but even with full camo we were not hidden. We set our decoys out and started calling. Crows did come to the call, but as soon as they cleared the tree line, they spotted us, and did a u-turn. Not one of us got close to getting a shot off. My buddy was soon convinced and we moved to some heavy cover.
Anyone that wants to test their hunting skills try some crow hunting.

From so many to none, the city probably contracted a company to trap or poison the birds by what ever means were legal.  They do not announce things like this that are not politically correct.


I did use the pigeons for training my dog when he was a pup.  The farmers had no problem with me shooting them ;D


Let us know if you find out what happened to all the pigeons.
