Should prospective employers have the right to your facebook password??

I just tell them that I don't have a facebook page, even if I do.  What I do on my time is my business.

  My son talked me into going onto facebook about a year ago.  If somebody wants to see my facebook account..enjoy !
 
  They may get as much as one sentence every other month..then, nothing of any importance.

  BTW:  If they snoop into your Facebook acct..does that allow them to snoop into what other people among your "friends" are saying ?

They dont need to have my password to locate my Face Book page if I have one and veiw whats public.  Ill admit that it would be much easier for them to find my page if I have one if I would just give them the pass word.  But then would you give them the pass word for your bank accounts so they could look at your finaces?  If you would then please fill out a Job App with Lunatic Fringe Inc Racing...Im not going to hire you of course, but  Im long over due for a vacation and a little globe trotting.  Besides a 572 cid Kieth Black aluminum block aint exactly cheap either!

   LunFringe has a valid point..What's next our bank acct number ?  I suppose if I were hit with that question concerning passwords...I would be inclined to say;... "let's be fair and exchange Facebook passwords !"

Likely, they will run a 'credit check' on a prospective employee; like insurance companies or banks do....if you gove them date of birth, SS number, and address....I'm betting they can get bank balances, outstanding loan balances, late charges,,,,,,probably all kinds of  information. With that information con artists can steal your identity and break into your accounts. They can also buy 'peasants insurance' on you...

As far as what others know about you, it is all over the place. Quite a few years ago there was already a program for car dealers. This program would read a customer's phone number when they called in and then display that person's vehicle ownership by not only make and model but by how long you had owned it and how you paid for it. It also displayed credit info and general financial info.

   Not surprising.. last fall I was getting ready to purchase a new car, so I did some research on the web.  I did buy a car but since then i have been getting a lot of junk mail from car dealers.   I'm still getting flyers with phony keys to fit a giveaway car and scratch-off mailings.  I just junk them without keying or scratching off..

   But nobody has a right to be hired by any company.  If the terms of the employment are that you must give your facebook password to apply, then those are the terms of the employment.  If you don't like it, fine.  Don't apply for the job.

I also think it is unrealistic to think that ANYTHING on the internet is completely "PRIVATE". Like it or not, everything we put out there is exposed and open to fire and we have to be prepared to back up any of our views and opinions.
 
"Give" your password and unlimited access? ABSOLUTELY NOT! But granting supervised access so a prospective employer can get an idea of just what kind of knucklehead they might be considering hiring...I can see it.
 
The fact is, when you read all the fine print upon openig an account to any website you will see that the internet is a huge PUBLIC FORUM that does not allow TRUE privacy. It is simply the nature of the "beast"! (did I just hint at getting biblical?)
 
We all know that we have to be responsible and accountable for whatever we put out there. Because like it or not, someone has to have access to maintain the site and someone is always going to see it.
 
People, Wake up and understand that Privacy is a thing of the past! George Orwell predicted this back in the 50's, we forgot and right under our noses his vision is here. Although it may not be the exact bleak and extreme picture he painted in "1984", there are many parallels.
 
Try to think of the web as one battle field. If your going to be on it, you're going to be exposed and you will eventually be targeted and fired upon. So when you do get on ALWAYS TRY TO PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FOWARD.

Fired after already being hired? That is different issue. "Oops, we think we should have done a little more homework before we hired you so now caugh up the password!"  I don't know...

There are certain jobs where being a drunk or a drug addict would pose a safety hazard. Do you want a drunk or high surgeon or airline pilot? Perhaps a drunk behind the wheel of a tractor trailer?

Silly red herring. There are lots of folks who drink, smoke, play cards, go to church, or smoke weed... but they can do that without doing it on the job.


On can drink without being a drunk, and one can indulge in other substances (let's stick to weed for now) without being a drug addict.

       That would be a poor tradeoff, get private employers out of our private lives so senators can probe in where the potential employers leave off.
   Finisher has a point, I suppose a potential employer can ask for anything they want.. but the applicant doesn't have to take a job with them..   Coming up with that demand after employment is perhaps a different matter.
 
   As far as Facebook..it strikes me as a mixture of teeeny-bopper chatter and elder gossip..I don't go there very often.

Handing over the password only gains them the additional access to private messages, over what is seen with full access and no password. Offering password access violates the confidence of your friends.

I don't have a FB account, but If I did and were asked for the password, I offer to give it to them but ask to first swap paper that acknowledged that they were asking for access to information contained in private messages about my age, marital status and religious views..

There are some jobs that where the public image of the person is the essence of their employment. For example, a minister in view of a call should not balk at granting full external access, but not the password. There could be private messages that would be protected by pastoral priviledge or even by HIPPA laws.

The employers that require FB passwords will eventually be paying a premium in salaries for the right to access, as it should limit the pool from which they are able to draw.

Its is almost at the point, if you dont have a facebook account you will not be elligable for certain jobs. Someone mentioned they will want to do your checkbook next. They already do that. A lot of companies have people do a credit check on you much like a car dealership.
People I know on facebook do not understand the internet. They do not think past the point of the letters they type. They think it is between them and the people they talk to, not the whole world. Most are naive as new baby chicks.
