Two terrific rounds. The 6.8 SPC is probably a better choice because it has some corporate backing.  Better yet might be the 30 Remington AR.

Ha!  I really wonder how much practical field difference, if any at all,  there is between the 6.8 SPC, the 6.5 Grendel and the 260 Rem, and how all of them stack up against the 6.5 Swede.....

The Swede and 260 won't fit an AR15 action and currently, the Grendel and SPC are far more readily available as far as brass, dies and other accessories go, than the RAR. That is why I am looking at those two cartridges.

I'd be willing to bet there's not much of a practical difference between the two.  Cartridges designed for the AR15 platform must fit well defined constraints like chamber pressure and cartridge size(in order to fit AR mags).  This gives you a pretty specific upper limit for performance - yet every different manufacturer seems to come up with their own concept just to boost sales.  All you really need to do is pick the one that you like, in terms of available bullet weights and velocity range - I wouldn't worry about trying to figure out what the exact difference between them really is.

Les Baer builds a nice long range 6.5 . I read alot where it is the better of the two for long range shooting. The 6.8 is better up close , has more aval. ammo.  ::)  .
I built a 6.8 and like it alot.

Do a search for loaded ammo or components and the 6.8 is a clear winner. i choose the 6.8 in an M4 configuration for that reason.

Silver State Armory has released a new factory load for the 6.8 that is extending the range a little...

It is a 6.8mm SPC 140gr VLD Berger.  The energy down-range exceeds 500 foot pounds at 800 yards according to SSA.  They also claim that it is still supersonic past 1,000 yards.

Not that there are a lot of people out there that can make consistent and accurate hits at that distance...

Here its hard to find any 6.8 ammo other than Remington or Hornady and we have lots of gun shops . SSA ammo is aval. in a shop in Va Beach 100 miles away but it is scooped up as fast as it arrives in the store.

Neither of the two can ever compete with the longer .264" cartridges.
I do know that the 6.8 is effective against large mule deer within 100 yards. A kid I know, too ignorant to know that the job required a .30 Magnum, put one down with his Bushmaster with one 115-grain bullet.
I see that the Silver State 140-grain 6.8, when sighted dead-on at 500 yards, will be 30 feet low at 1000. Supersonic speed won't really matter at that point. Since the standard bullet is 115 grains, the 140 surely requires a different barrel, as well as special magazines.
I think the best answer is: Both are fine, but an AR-10 platform in 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 Rem would be the best choice. The limitations of the AR-15 platform just kill the potential of the long, slender 6.6 bullet.

Why is it we need magnum power to kill deer but have no problem recomending a 55 gr 223 for defense aginst men ? As a hunter i have taken many white tails with a 7X30 WATERS . A 120 gr bullet , flat point at that. I have not had any run off. If the preformance of what ever round you can load into an AR will match the 7X30 or come close it should make a fine deer getter.
Why is it always the long shot a gun is mesured by ? I for one like to hunt not snipe and find a light weight med. power round just perfect in many cases .
Here in Va. 100 yard shots or closer are more common than long range , hey we hunt deer with shotguns and do just fine contray to what those who never have believe.
I find the AR somewhat arkward to carry while hunting but that may be my getting used to it . I don't think a 6.8 will have any trouble putting deer down at the ranges many hunt.

Isn't the 6.5 Grindle shorter and fatter than the 6.8 SPC?  Thus longer more pointed bullets for it being better downrange?  However the 6.8 SPC has more backing and a ammo suppliers.  Kindof like Sony Beta and VHS about 30 years ago or 5-1/4" floppy vs the 8.5 floppy.

Yes the Grendel is shorter and fatter and will let you load longer bullets to mag length. It also has slightly more case capacity. I have never seen any Grendel/LBC ammo on the shelves in a LGS but then I've never seen any 6.8 either.  ;)

The 6.8 seems to feed easier than the Grendel and you can use Grendel mags for it if you want.
