Shootall started me thinking a couple of days ago with a mousegun thread.  To fit my own needs I procured a NAA mini revolver, not even the the 22 mag, I got the 22lr.  As I age I am more and more concered with close quarter capability.  In the past a revolver with a "Fitz treatment"  was the embodiment of a belly gun.  That is to say a weapon designed to be fired at a distance so point blank that the gun was actually touching its target.  Such employment of a weapon would not only cause an entry wound but would also blow in hot expanded gas.  In my mind such a use of a weapon would only be justified when;
1    I was in fear of vast,VAST, bodily harm
2    Every thing else had been tried
3    It was the absolute last alternative
I am open to suggestions and comments but I might add that I do have a conealed carry and a cane. I have been taught how to use both by professinals.  These are for beyond arms reach. My concern as I said above is when I am in arms reach or closeror when it appears I am disarmed.

I'm not at all sure of your definition of a "belly gun". The original definition was one carried in front of the hip, and inside the pants, preferably in a soft holster. You post seems to point to gut shootin someone, in close.
I personally carry a belly gun, EVERY DAY. It is either a Glock 27, or a Glock 23.  Both are 40 caliber, and both are fighting pistols at pistol ranges. In close, or a little further depending on situation, and skill level.
From personal experience, a fight can come unexpectedly, and usually does, but often it can be anticipated. I try never to put myself in the unexpected category, and I set myself up, when I am in restaurants, stores, and parking lots, as to being able guard against any sort of ambush, or aggressive act.
Because of my past career, it has become my nature.
To me, a belly gun should be major caliber, and not limited to "in close", which I call "too close". If I tell a stranger, or aggressor to back off, he needs to listen, or he will find out how serious I am about it. Will I just shoot him? That will be up to him, on how it ends. My decision was made long ago.

I will take my NAA .22mag/.22lr (I have the convertible model) over a knife any day. Although, I always have my Kershaw OD-1 Flipper in my back pocket as well...

Being that I stay out of sketchy areas, and I am 5'8 and 220lbs...I don't really get confronted. Then again, I wear t-shirt and Jeans, I don't appear as if I would have money on me, and...I rarely do lol.

I would rather have my NAA in my pocket than my 1911 at home in the safe (because its a range gun, not a carry gun for me).

In my opinion even a .25 is better then nothing.  However, I would favor one of the small polymer framed guns like the Taures, Ruger LCP or KelTec.  My choice would be the Keltec in either .32 or .380.  Mine is a second generation P3AT that I carry in the back pocket which I think is faster.  Sights are pretty crude but at 7 yards or less just point the slide and shoot.
