That never happened to me before!
« on: March 28, 2012, 07:08:23 AM »
I just went outside to get the mail. I must have walke out the door at the exact right second as a hawk came within inches of hitting me in the head. I could feel the wind as it passed by. It must have already been commited to its dive as its target was a dove in a tree about 15 feet to my right. The dove got away. Pretty neat but scary at the same time. I didnt get a really good look at it but it seemed to be too small to be a red tailed hawk which is the predominate species around the house here.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

That happened to me once while sitting in a fence row calling coyotes. Got a nice little scar on the back of my head from it. :o

I feel your pain, LOL.  Once while calling crow, I had the speaker right next to me as I was laying in a field.  A decoy was right next to it.  A nice big fat red tail hawk decided to appear out of nowhere and attack the speaker and decoy.  I peed myself a little.  Just a little though......
It's all a hot mess...........

I think I would pee more than a little if a big old owl came in out of the darkness for my hat!

I never had  one hit me but years ago I was feeling my way down an old field road before dawn on the way to my deer stand, rained the night before and there was no moon or stars, the black was deathly still. No wind, you could of heard a pin drop. Suddenly a horned owl directly above me went HOOOOO. I don't know how high in the air I got but I was sufficiently awakened. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I hunt with a guy who was laying in a good hide using a mouth call to call fox. Well the fox messed up and came in from behind him . It ran up his legs and back spun around looking him in the eye at bad breath range . The fox realized his mistake first and left the way he came. The guy never hunted fox alone after that. I can feel for him , I was putting trash in a dumpster one night and a fox came out , up my arm bumped my ear and was gone over my back. He stopped to look back and was grinning , he knew he had me !

I was calling on the side of a river.  I was sitting facing across the river.  Suddenly I heard wind whisteling, and my hat took off. A Great Horned Owl, had flown in from behind me and grabbed my hat.  Scared the heck out of me.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Many, many years ago my cousin and I were setting beside a trail on a log that was parallel to and beside  the trail, almost up against a beech tree. We had our backs to the trail and my cousin was carving on the beech tree. Something and I seem to think it was a sniff noise made me turn around and I could have laid my hand on the out stretched face of a black bear. ...It was that close. I yelled bear and left at a dead run and remember him yelling something like where are you going, then he passed me.
Neither of us heard anything before I turned around and I guess the sound of it smelling us out made the noise that made me turn around. I was about 11 years old and he is a few years older.

Sitting in my eash chair when a cardinal crashed into the sliding door glass.  Hot on its heels was a hawk.  The cardinal was stunned and could not fly but it had the good sense to get under some lawn furniture where the hawk couldn't get to it.  After about 20 seconds, the hawk won.

One evening while prairie dog shooting, back against a mesquite tree.  Kept hearing a low growl...after perhaps 30 minutes of this turning around and not seeing anything, I got up and there in a prairie dog hole 2 ft behind me was a badger...he came out of the hole towards me and I fired my .22 and hit beside him. scared him enough he went underground again and I left....I think I wet myself a little also....
2 yrs ago while draining a tank (gasoline...80,000 bbls) for water.  I opened the water box and something hit my leg....I jumped and a fox ran out of the box shaking his head...shin was sore but thats all, he looked back at me after about 30 yrds and trotted off over the tank dike.  Come to find out....others had been feeding him chicken for over a year and failed to let me in on it....scared the daylights out of me...I think i sharted about the time he hit my shin.

Many times when turkey hunting, and using an owl hoot as a locater call, my son and I have had owls dive bomb us. I've  had squirrels run up my legs and body when sitting against a tree. Had one perch on my shoulder with an acorn while in a tree stand. One of the most memerable events was when bow hunting. I was walking a ridge when I noticed a large Doe walking the bottom below me. I stopped and used a fawn bleat and the Doe started up the hill towards me. I drew my bow and was ready to shoot when all of a sudden she bolted. Couldn't figure why untill I heard a noise in a large brush pile that was off to my right a bit. Out stepped one of the largest Bobcats I'd ever seen. He gave me a look like I had messed up his hunt rather than him messing up mine. We had quite a staring contest untill he took a step towards me. He took an arrow for his effort! When I took my son squirrel hunting, leaving him alone in a good spot for the first time, I had just walked off when I heard a shot. Then my son yelling Dad! I made a bee line back to him and saw a large Coyote laying almost at his feet. He said he saw it coming but was afraid to shoot it with his single shot .410. However when it started for him he said he was more afraid not to shoot it. He blasted it in the face at point blank range. It had obviously meant to attack him. Spend enough time in the outdoors and all kinds of stuff happens. :)

I've had hawks strafe my duck decoys on several occasions. Lucky for them I can still see the difference between a hawk and a duck. :)
