new 44 mag

got it new, found it on sale for $229 OTD.

the stock is huge on the frame, not smooth and streamline plus the whole gun is TINY! also, there are 3 blemishes in the stock, its light blonde with 3 dark streaks.

its on a CAC receiver and might anyone know what the compact 44's prefer as to .429 or .430?

load advice is always welcome, wanting to load for both pistol and handi (which isnt much bigger)

Have you sluged the bore yet? Mine seemed to like the .430" the best but would shoot the .429" good as well

Your new .44 should do fine at .430.  Mine is one of the old ones and .433s make it smile.  The same rule applies here as with the .357 mag. to maxi.  Ream it to .445.  You won't be unhappy and it'll still shoot the rest just fine.

I have a 20" compact 44 Mag barrel from the Illion factory and it is fine with 0.430" gas checked lead.   Since you bought a new gun with CAC receiver your barrel is from Illion as well so you probably will be able to shoot 0.430" lead.  H110 powder is usually easy to find and www.hodgdon.com at their load datacenter for load info and you should be off and running.

Is there a way to tell were the 44 mag barrel was made if you don't have the production date.  When did Illion start making  barrels. Mine has 6 rifling and 6 groves, the groves mic at .430  and has the warning on the barrel.  Does any one have the time fram when they made the different dia. barrels. Looks like I will need to sort thought the FAQ again?

I don't think Ilion has ever made barrels, Marlin has been making them. 44 Mag rifle specs aren't the same as pistol specs, it just depends on when the barrel was made in the life of the broaches Marlin uses, towards the end of tool life bores will be the tightest.

Tim, you've just confused me beyond comprehension... Wasn't aware there was a difference between rifle and pistol and the schematic you posted baffles me. Can you break it down to sesame st. level?

Everyone expects to see a .429-.430" bore in a 44 Mag rifle, but SAAMI specs for the 44 Mag pistol aren't the same as for a rifle, the bore is bigger on rifles.

I am totally unimpressed with SAAMI at this point.  The whole reason for having a .44 mag rifle is to have a same caliber gun as pistol, so you can use the same ammo!

Before you get all worked up... I suggest you just go shoot it and see what the BARREL LIKES. We can speculate till the cows come home... what the barrel shoots well is all that matters...
