Trying to decide
« on: March 29, 2012, 03:18:07 PM »
My new 35 Rem barrel will be in tomorrow.  Should I leave it original or ream to 356/358.  I have the dies for the 356 and none for the 35 Rem.  Fair amount of 308 brass to play with, no 356 or 35 Rem..

I have heard Louisiana may follow Mississippi in allowing anything larger than 35 cal in an appropriate single shot.  So the 35 Rem would be all that is necessary for deer.

It's a grand old caliber, kinda hate to totally change the barrel.

What you think.

I can't promote the .356 Win enough! Besides that, I bet you would be the only kid on your block with a Handi in .356 Win. ;D

Now that I have a 35 Rem, if I ever come across another barrel it will be reamed to 356.  They just sound like fun and like Dinny says, you would be the only kid on the block...

Bobby, why do you even bother to ask that question here?  You already know the answer.  Both, of course ;)   A guy on another forum was saying he loads the .356 to factory .35 Rem. levels and hot rods the .358.  Kinda makes sense.  Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'll lets some of the very first shots outta my 356WIN do my talking...

Here is the very first shot, (single bottom hole) then moved it up and fired three in a row.

@50

The 35 is a great caliber, the 356 improves on its ballistics and eliminates the head space problems that plague this caliber when fired in SS actions.

CW,

That sure looks good.  How about recoil?  Is there much difference in recoil between the 35 Rem and 356?  I know the 356 is for all practical purposes a necked up 308 with a rim, but I haven't researched the rim size difference.

The rim is 30-30 sized, (#2 shell holder) so not huge as the dia. on the case is bigger than the 30-30. Yes its bigger then the 35.

I don't find recoil a problem at all. Yes its more than a 35 rem but not excessively so. Its on par with the 308 maybe a tad more.. Recoil is extreamly personal thing..

Bobby, CW answered all the questions except recoil.  It IS a personal thing, and subjective.  I notice the bark more than the bite.  Mine being cut to 18 inches, there's a bit of blast.  I'm only shooting 200 gr. bullets at the moment, waiting for 225 Sierra Gamekings.  To me, the felt recoil is not much more than the .308.  I also can't tell any difference between .356 and .358.  You can shoot a lot of them without getting beat up.  If I recall, you shoot a .45-70 with some fairly hot and heavy loads  The .356/.358 is a Daisy Red Ryder in comparison.

Good luck and let us know which way you jump.

George,
The twists are nearly the same so I would lean towards the .357 Mag barrel. IMO, it's best to clean more chamber than less.

Tom, I don't know for sure, but it's gotta be pretty stiff.  I was scared to find out, so when I traded jeepmann1948, George, my 7mm-08 barrel for his maxi, I did what any coward would do.  I fit it up on one of my spare frames.  Then, in the dark of night, crept in and swiped Patty's .357 mag rifle, replaced it with the maxi, and sent her barrel off to be reamed and cut. :-[ :-[ :-[ ;) ;) ;)

Got the 356 reamer in hand today.  I ordered the 35 rem barrel figuring it would be easier to hand ream if I decided to.  From what I've seen, the 356 should clean the chamber up.  Or am I off base here?  If I am, I'll send the reamer back and keep my 35 remington.
