22 Hornet
« on: March 29, 2012, 03:24:41 PM »
Howdy:

Let's hear from you Hornet shooters out there. I love mine, and have developed me some squirrel loads, and will be loading up some more potent ones for a lil longer distance shooting. This is one fun sweet lil gun to shoot.

Best,

Same here, love it!

Case full of LIL Gun topped off with a 35G Hornady... ZIPS right along and settles into tiny groups...

Then my old stand by 45G hornet bullet and IMR4198 shoots slower but is no slouch in the accuracy dept in its own right....

Don't count out H110, I have had very good luck with this powder. In my Contender it edges out Lil'Gun by just a bit depending on bullet weight.
Haven't quit figured out which powder and bullet the H&R Hornet likes yet.
Just got a H&R 223 Ultra, so the Hornet has taken a back seat for now.  :) Waiting on dies to arrive to start on this one.
The Hornet is a fun caliber to load and shoot though, one of the best.

my 157 liked 2400/H4227 and lilgun. I actually shot out my 157 and I found another 157 barrel and having it fit to the action. It has always loved the old solid base 45 grn nosler bullet. Mine would never group 40 grn bullets very well then i tried speer 33grn tnt and it loves them. My 21" contender barrel also likes my load of 11.5 or 12 grns of lil gun with either the 45 nosler or 33 grn speer bullet.

Kurt, My Contender is a 14" barrel ,  1-12 twist, I have never slugged it so I don't know the actual bore diameter. All I know is it shoots .224 bullets very well in either 35 or 40 Gr. LiL'Gun and H110 seem to be pretty equal as far as accuracy goes. As you know the .223 bullets would not shoot for nothing out of my Contender or my H&R hornet.

1:16 is about limited to a traditional design 45gr. bullet. At the typical cast bullet velo's you cant really get longer, thus heavier, bullets to stabilize by an increase in velo. At least it didnt work for me in 3 Hornets and over 4000 rounds of mostly cast bullets, YMMV. That said, the old 45gr. is really a dandy and has been doing the job for a long, long time. I shot a lot of rounds about as cheap as you can get, mostly at 50yd. target paper going for group size. Funny thing I finally realized is that I had to work at it to get it to shoot as consistently as small groups as a decent shooting .22LR at the same range/paper, side by side, most sessions. Not that it was bad, mind you, 3/10ths " for 5 was a typical good group if I did my part, but I would usually pull one farther out and 'blow the group' (Im my own worst shooting partner).
BTW, I found my best consistent accuracy under 1450fps (chrono'ed), 1350-1450 seemed to be the happy place for my WWt bullets.

The only 16" twist H&R Hornet barrels are vintage barrels(pre '87), anything made since 1987 or so will be 1:12", anything made since about 2007-2008 will be 1:9", both of mine are 1:12".
