buckweet,
Have you done a search to see what a 20Hp 4 stroke new outboard goes for?
It looks like you got $2500 tied up in the boat and trailer, so a actual price for the new motor needs to be found. Then you can see whether is a good deal or not!
Maybe I`m missing something here, but where did you come up with $3500?

No i havent?  But he priced the motor to me at a thousand.
My pop said thats good .. most sell for a hundred dollars a horse. Rule of thumb?
I will go 3500 for the rig ...but not 4900 .

I think thats way too high.

If you can't see land don't be caught in a Jon boat, not enough free board and a storm can blow up quicker than you can make shore with a 20 hp = swamped!

I see where you come up with the $3500 now! Of course in your original post you did not say that he would sell you the motor for
$1000. So the total $4900 to me is somewhat excessive!

$1000 for a new, 20hp four stroke outboard does not sound right.  Thats about the price of a two stroke 9.9 kicker.  The $4900 sounds about right considering what that motor should sell for.  New boat prices are out of sight.  I have a 20 foot deep V aluminum boat I bought back in 1987, complete with 60hp Merc and trailer for $8700 new.  The same rig now is about $18,000 new.  Set Up usually includes mounting the motor, fitting the trailer, a gas can and line, battery, and usually a coast guard kit (life preservers, a throwable, fire extinguisher, signal device, anchor).

I have spent a lot of time on lake Ontario trolling for trout and salmon in a 16 foot tin boat, sometimes in some pretty bad weather.  Tin boats are like beer cans, they tend to float high in the water.  But, as was posted earlier, high gunwales are important for rough weather.  There are "big" 16 footers, and "small" 16 footers.  You would be amazed what a boat can handle if the operator knows what he is doing.

A boat like you describe should be fine for most inland lakes.  The semi V will help with the chop.  Just use common sense, and invest in a cheap hand held Marine Radio for safety and weather updates / warnings.

Around truman you can just drive around the old 2 lane highways and shop for boats by looking people's yards.  If you see a chicken, a lawnmower, or concrete yard art you like it's available too!

A good tight WELDED semi-v of the type you are talking about isn't a bad deal.  Solid running used motors can be found cheaper.  Aluminum boats run from extremely leaky and beat up to thick guage welded in like new condition, and the prices range with them from 300-20,000.  Throw us a bit more detail or a picture and it might help some.  And particularly in that neck of the woods, beware of a deal that seems too good.

I have been in both welded and rivited . I have a Lowe that is rivited and its a 1979 mod in does not leak. It has been in rough water both salt and fresh water. I have heard it sais buy several who rent boats , "nothing takes a beating like an airplane and they are rivited . I have seen both leak but a welded boat has less flex and cracks easier I feel. That is Ga metal being the same.

I'd love to buy half a dozen new 20hp 4 stroke outboards for $1k per copy. They run $3k+ around here. For a 16' V with a 72" beam, rigged out, and a trailer, plus a new 4 stroke 20hp, $4900 isn't a bad price.
I fished biweekly club tournaments on a cypress timbered lake for about 10yrs. The lake had a 10hp limit so all of the 30 or so boats were aluminum. The riveted boats took far more abuse than the welded, and were much easier to repair by tightening rivets when they leaked. The welded boats had to be welded frequently and cracked in the heat effected zone. I still have the two Lowes my wife and I ran. They are 20 yrs old now and pretty rough on the bottoms, but are still dry. Given the choice I'd go with the riveted.

With that boat a 20hp should get you 20 mph give or take 5 mph for weight of occupants,  gear and how the trim is set. Just depends how far shore is away as to if it is enough or not. I ran a little 15 ft semi v fiberglass with a 48 hp for years that cruised at about 25. It was plenty for me on a big lake.
Storms blow up quick and are frequent here. Got wet several times, hailed on a few, but never a problem to get back. You just have to give it a bit of throttle when it gets rough instead of less throttle as most folks want to do.

The Coast Guard offers Safe Boating courses. It might be a good idea to take advantage of those. Knowing how to operate a boat in rough water is at least as important as the boat.  I run an 18' fiberglass bass boat with a 150hp motor. Sometimes the big water gets too rough for my rig. It's great to know how to handle a boat in rough water, even better to know when to stay on the bank. There are some great choices in Marine GPS and depth sounders to aid navigation and lots of choices in marine radios to check weather and call for assistance if needed.  Always good to have maps and a compass for backup as well.
Enjoy your rig!

Isn't the Big Foot geared and propped for pushing heavy loads? If so, it might not be a good choice for cruising with a boat the size and weight of yours. Just a thought-----------.
