Cerrosafe Weekend On Tap

I've got a couple of chamber cast projects in mind.  I've done a few with decent sucess, but am always looking for tips for technique.

Take the Ejector/Extracor out and plug that hole.
Preheat the barrel with a blow dryer or something.

Be sure of a good plug and as Necchi says, removing the extractor is always a good idea.  ::)

Take pics along the way, I know its talked about in the FAQ's but I don't think anyone did a step by step with pics yet...

There was a link to Surplus Rifle with step by step instructions and great pics in the FAQs, but I think SR is no more, so the only instructional links are those from Brownell's. Best tip I can offer is preheat the barrel, it makes a big difference in how good a cast you'll get, just like runnin lead for bullets, the mold has to be hot before the bullets come out good!  ;)

Interested in what people use as a plug when making a cast.  I use a rod with a piece of cleaning cloth, but the cloth always gets stuck to the material and I have to burn off a little bit when I am done.

I use cotton tee-shirts, cut into strips and rolled like a bandage.  It'll stick a bit but it tears off cleanly.  I do pack the plug from both ends using a wood dowel.

I use a tight patched jag on the end of a rod for a plug, I use military patches which have a fuzzy side and hard side, put the hard side out, it sticks a little, but not like the fuzzy side, no fuzz stuck to the casting.  8)

thanks, I used a synthetic, fibrous, patch that left a lot of fuzz in the mold.
 
There are a few online videos of the process I was able to find via a simple search.  Midway has a couple also and one while doing a completely assembled lever action rifle.  I would never attempt this on anything but a stand alone barrel, but thats just my fear.

The SR instructions showed casting a military bolt action rifle, they used a funnel and vinyl tubing to get the Cerrosafe in the chamber.  8)

Now it's sporting a nice throat of 0.27 inches.  Just a very few turns is all it takes.
