22 Magnum cause that's what I've got (both 16" and 10").  And sometimes I'm just too lazy to reload!

I have a Bullberry  21" Carbine in 22WMR, I could not ask for more! Great barrel, relatively cheap ammo, compared to 22 Hornet, REMINGTON Premiers are great!!  Just a really accurate great barrel  and caliber.

Sorry, I lost track of what forum I was in!!   I saw your reference to the Ruger  22/77, but I see you are interested in a pistol  caliber.

I have both calibers. A 10" and a 16" 22 Hornet as well as a 14" .22 WRM.

I love all three. I like the reloadability of the Hornet and the extra power without a lot of muzzle blast of that caliber. I also like the rimfire magnum. A couple of summers ago I did a lot of varminting in North Dakota, Montana as well as Washington State with just the 14" 22 magnum. A lot of gophers, woodchucks and prairie dogs bit the dust to this easterner doing the belly crawl on them.

One thing that I liked about the 22 WRM is that you can carry a TC as well as a Ruger SS with the mag cylinder. Two guns, one short range and one long range using the same ammo. That is one thing to consider when looking at the caliber.

The Hornet hands down if you reload. You can load for the hornet cheaper than you can buy ammo for the rim fire, it`s alot more powerfull, or you can load it down if you want. If you don`t want to reload go with the  rimfire. If you want a real long range little gun get your self a .17 Ackley Hornet barrel. With 10.4 grn. of powder I`m pushing a 19 grn. bullet at 3,600 fps. and it shoots point blank (+ or - 2 1/2 in.) to 290 yrds.

Hornet if you do not mind reloading.  As catfish said, you can reload Hornets for the same price as the 22 Mags and the Hornet is a little more powerful and gives you a wider bullet selection, Spire Points, Hollow Points, V-Max etc.

.22 WMR if you are lazy... .22 Hornet if you feel like reloading.  Personally, I prefer the .22 Hornet, hands down, but then again, I enjoy the reloading process and the flexibility of the loads that one can make.  I personally don't see a whole lot of difference in the 2 calibers, depending on what you are shooting at.  What will the barrel be used for?
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

I would get the 22 hornet then have an adapter made up so you can shoot the 22 mag out of the hornet barrel and then maybe even a 22 lr one to boot

I had an adapter for the 22 mag for the Hornet in my TC made. After two of them splitting on me I gave up the idea and bought a 22 WRM barrel. Maybe that is just my experience but I decided that it didn't work for me.

Ok,OK Let's take out the reloading option. I do reload but the hornet seems to more trouble than its worth. The mag has at least a dozen factory loads, but the hornet has a couple of new ones i have not shot yet .(hornady v-max,win supreme). The barrel will be used on crows, grondhogs, and those pesky wal-nuts mostly inside of 100 yards. In my experience, the hornet does put down the hogs a little faster, but those tough North Carolina wal-nuts can absorb two or three shots before they crack, so the mag would be cheaper to shoot.   I guess i could reload the hornet if i ever wanted to. OK i'm leaning toward the hornet. What do you think???? FYI, if you love both these rounds as i do, both have a good article in guns and ammo this month.

thanks,GNNC

How about neither. The 221 fireball has better brass and loads for good varmint bullets are readily available.

22 Hornet,
My barrel is 22 ins. It`s a Bullberry with a tight throught. I`ve seen post where guy`s are getting more velosity than I am, but H-4227 is the only powder I`ve ever used in it. I get such good group I just can`t bring myself to try any else. I use the 19 grn. Calhoon bullets for varnints but for coon and other smaller fur bears I use the 20 grn. Berger MEF as those darn Calhoon bullets leaves holes like a .22-250 on coon.

I shoot a Hornet for NRA Hunter pistol Silhouette.  My load is mild, 8.3gr of H4227 with a Winchester 50gr psp for a volicity of 1600+ fps.  I don't remember the exact volicity.  I use a Lee Collet die set on a lee turret press and prime with a lee hand tool.  I can load 200 rounds in about 1.5 hours and I am getting sub moa groups at 100 meters.  I have loaded all of my brass 10 times and have not streched it enough to need trimming yet, and I do check it each time.

I have not hunted with this rig but did do some load development useing some old Winchester brass and win 46gr hp bullets with 296 powder.  The first try gave good results.  I don't remember the exact charge or group size or volicity but I loaded up 100 of these and set them on the shelf for when I get time to go coyote hunting.

I don't find the Hornet difficult to load for and the accuracy is better than most of the guys useing 22 mags out at the silhouette range get.  It is a little cheaper too.  The cost per round is under 10 cents, , 7 cents going for the bullet.

I would go with a Hornet,

Sixgun
You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

I'll go with the Hornet over the 22Mag but, would pick a 22 Rem Jet over all. Just my opinion tho.

Why not a .223? You can dowload to hornet velocities and still have the capability of 300 yard shots with full scale loads.

I dunno, seems to me that since you are already have one, and are set up to load the hornet, and apparently have some experience, that leaves you "wanting", get the .22 MAG.

Then later when you decide that the MAG doesnt "do it" for you, buy yourself the Hornet barrel.

The correct answer IS....GET BOTH!!  My personal choice for your situation would be the 17HMR though.  It's a dandy and tons of fun, but so are the Hornet and 22mag.  Good Luck,  Walt   :D

Not in a T/C but still both.    The mag is fun and is usable in my Single six.  Handy when I'm too lazy to reload.  The hornet is more versatile.  On fat woodchucks, it does a better job and I have a better selection of bullets.
