357 Max Variants

Thought I would post some pictures of some of the Maxis I have done. The black synthetic is the Rooster's (3 deer so far ) The Handi grip is one I built for me until one of the Grandkids claim it. The green lam stocked one is for Miss Sassy' s first deer gun. The pallet wood one is just in the pic for size comparison. The Savage 24V is a bunch of guns on one platform, all the 38 family of shells plus all the 20ga shells as well including the 3" mag stuff. The choke tubes really make it a versatile shotgun.

Nice collection of 357s you have "started" there. I would love a Savage like that with the 38 family. Didn't know the made them in 38. All I ever see are 22 or 30-30.

The Savage started out as a 357 mag over 20ga. I reamed it to 357 max to increase the load choices.the dual fold down sights do not see much use, but when I could see them they were quite useful.The old Weaver scope works very well.I must say that the 20ga 3" slugs are not much fun to shoot very many at a time though  ::)
 The Handi's began life as shotgun barrels that I stubbed with light weight 357 barrels and reamed to 357 Max.Just like the factory barrels they shoot the full spectrum of 38 cartridges very well.

I thought those barrels looked thinner and lighter. I once had the thought to rebore a .22H superlight barrel to make a lightweight Maxi Handi.  After shooting a lightweight barreled Maxi in a TC Encore, I now prefer a little heft.

That is a dissapointment that the factory handi comes with such a fat barrel. I bobbed mine to little over legal length, and it is still a clunk. It would be so nice with a light weight bbl.

Nice looking family ya got there George.  I'm looking now at the new Savage Model 42 over and under.  I've always wanted a 24 and never got one.  I don't think I'll pass this time around.  I want to enjoy it while I can.  I sure wish H&R would make an over and under.  I can't understand why they don't.  I'd have one in a heart beat.....something like your maxi over 20 or a .223 over a 12 or 20.

Pete , just looked at the new Savage 42......... talk about UGLY ;D . I have not seen a 357 24V for sale here for many years, guess everyone that has one is hanging on to it.I had a 223/20ga that I did the same treatment to but a fella wanted it a lot more than I did.
 The homemade maxis have turned out really well so far.I have not shot them for groups but all 3 of them will hit the lid on a full water bottle at 50 yards with boring regularity.They also shoot 158gr 357 loads very well .
 The barrels came from Numrich already chambered for 357 mag. I threaded them to 12ga stubs , then Mig welded the two together, wrapped them up in welding blanket to allow them to cool slowly.The scope mount screws go thru the stub and into the rifle barrel portion . I do not worry about the stubs coming loose ;D

Jeepmann, I am glad I saw this thread and your reference to your Model 24 in .357 Mag over a 20 gauge and that you have reamed out to .357 Max. I have a .357 over 20 that I am the second owner of. The original owner, a fine older Maine gentleman bought it new and had it for years. It accounted for a number of deer, coyotes, many partridge, and other game as well, but when he saw a 30/30 over a 12 gauge in the local gun store in northern Maine he traded his .357/20 towards it. Luckily I was in the store not long after him and I snatched up the .357/20. I have posted in several areas looking for info on reaming it to .357 Max and if it could be done safely. Could you tell me a little about yours and how it has worked out?...Thanks....<><.... :)

Very nice collection of breakopen 357s.  I am assuming "Missy Sassy" is fairly young or you can dodge punches fairly quick.

 Miss Sassy is my pride and joy. A beautiful 8 year old that has me wrapped around her little finger! ( and I would not have it any other way ;D )

 The 24V was reamed to 357 Max to make it more versatile.I  shot "Hot" Loads in it to proof it ,then proceeded to work up a nice stable load with heavy bullets (220gr Speer). It is not picky as to which bullet it shoots, although I have never shot it for groups it nails the ends of cans on a regular basis.After all these years it is still as tight as it was when I got it. Does the same thing with 38 specials and 357 mag as well  ;D .The 20 ga is not for sporting clays,but it is a great hunting gun. Works very well for quail and rabbits with a modified tube,slip in the imp cyl. bore tube and it is good to go for the larger stuff or snakes. I must say a 3"mag slug or buckshot load will get your attention while the field loads are just plain fun to shoot.
 It is a shame that the 24's are bringing such ridiculous money right now. They are a great firearm for their intended uses.Mine has been carried all over the country and used when the occasion arose.
 Would I build another? In a heartbeat :D if I could find one!
 Is it better than a Handi? (this may rub some fur the wrong way) Yes , for its intended use :o
