Need Advice
« on: April 01, 2012, 06:32:46 PM »
I have a deal working for another complete 30-30. All the customizations I prefer have been done by my favorite riflesmith. He actually remembered the rifle from some time ago due to the extremely straight barrel it has. Now I currently have a 30-30 barrel that is part of my switch barrel 45-70 combo. I have plans for them to be customized soon. However, if I get the other one, I'm trying to think of what I should do with the current one. What do you think of me making it a 30-40 Krag? My thought is that I could have a true US Military Handi combo 45-70 GOVT and a 30 GOVT. I really don't need another 30cal rifle, but it's hard to resist Handi temptations.  ;D

You already know you're asking the wrong folks and you already know their answer.  Dinny, if it's any help to you, I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

If you don't have a 30-40 Krag you need one. (If you do have one, you need another one.)

You guys are terrible adviser ;D Kinda like asking Charlie Sheen if he wants another drink or snort of Coke!
Dinny, if you make the deal and if it is the one I think it is . I would leave it alone and ream the barrel you already have to 30 -40. I would have already bought it but Uncle Sam needed the tax money to help run the country. ;D
After you get a 30-40, the next logical step would be a 30-06 ,7.62x51,30 carbine,45 colt, 45ACP,22 hornet(survival guns) and 223 then you will have all the govt cartridges covered in your single shot assult rifles  ;D

Alright I will be the bad guy here. Dinny though you want the evtra 30-30 cause you want a 30-40. The next question is do you really need it rite now?(I know want and need are are close to the same thing in our handi world) Your current 30-30 you said shoot great. There will always be 30-30 barrels around to do the other chambering at a later time. Are all your other projects guns shooting as well as they can. Focus on getting them as good as possible if they are not already there and save this project for another day. DID I JUST SAY THIS :o

Just me but I specifically got two 30-30s to have an extra/spare because it's an easy to get, cheap ammo caliber.

Maybe you want a shorty 30-30?  Or take on a Mannlicher stock project...

You seem to want to assemble an obsolete military duo. Why not make it much more conplete and add a barrel in 6mma Lee Navy. Not many of them arpund and would ne period typical with the other two. IMHO.

With this project completion due sometime in the next 9 months (during my deployment), all my projects will be complete. Then all I have left is load development. I have plenty of 30cal bullets so all I would need is dies and brass. Seems like a good time to me. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

If you don't have a 30-40 Krag you need one. (If you do have one, you need another one.)

GP,
I like the way you think. ;D  I was thinking about having them coated afterwards, but parkerizing may look better for a military combo. Decision, decisions, decisions. Either way they get finished, I know I want them to be engraved/etched nicely with their GOVT style caliber designations so there's no confusion later on down the road.

Thanks, Dinny

I think you have decided, but I will add that this, The 30 GOVT is on my short list of "TO DO" calibers!

I now have a second 30-30 too and it shoots pretty good! I bought it thinking I would have it when the "urge" came over me for the 30/40...  The biggest thing that stops me os I have a 30-30, I have a 308 and I have a 307 HANDI... The 30/40 will do nothing these will not BUT it would be "cooler" doing the same things!  ::) ;)

One day I WILL build one!

Dinny,

I disagree with the "there will always be plenty of .30-30 barrels around . . ."  In my short 58 years I have lived to regret that line of thinking more times than I care to admit.  There can be lots of reasons that 30-30s could be hard/impossible to get.  Or you just may not be able to afford one!

Who knows?  Predicting the future is a risky business.  If you can afford it, get it.  That's my thoughts.

Keep the 30-30 shooter and 30-40 the other, you know you want to.
