Glue on sight ?
« on: April 04, 2012, 11:45:00 AM »
I read the FAQ's and it kind of went off topic, my question is, what epoxy is best for gluing on a sight set, that can be trusted not to let go ? I would like them to be permanantly installed, if possible. Sorry if I over looked the answer. :)

The short of it is none.  Epoxy will release at high temps, so if you shoot the barrel too hot, or lock it in a hot trunk in the summer, it may release.  I tried them all when I ran a golf repair shop, and all held great in  the absence of extreme heat.

I'm thinking JB weld?  But any slow cure epoxy in normal temps should work.

So it's probably best not to trust epoxy for installing sights ?

IMO it's better to silver solder, but if you're not hunting dangerous game, nor spending big bucks on a guide...........

Low temp silver solder is available that can be sweated with a micro butane torch, however some of these fellows might yet chime in with a story of success with epoxy....

On shotgun barrels that are too thin to D/T, the factory brazes them on.  And speaking from experience they don't come off very easily.

Most any epoxy will work as long as the metal is prepared properly first, that's the key to making epoxy work.  ;) Just cleaning and slapping the parts together doesn't work well, the surfaces must be roughed up a little for the epoxy to hold well, then degrease and mix the epoxy components good and curing within the temp range as recommended in the instructions will make a good bond.

Right on Tim!  I've had excellent results with JB Weld when the surfaces are prepared as Tim describes.  Then can be removed with heat, but I'm talking about a propane torch as the heat source.
