Nosler Sporting Handgun Bullets
« on: April 04, 2012, 12:09:54 PM »
I've been using Hornady 240 gr XTPs in my 44 mags for several years - first in Black Hills factory ammo then in reloads.  I recently found a good deal on these Nosler 240 gr JHPs.  Have any of you used them for deer or hog hunting?  I'm curious about accuracy and terminal performance.  The nose seems a good deal softer than the XTP.

I used them back in the early 80s to kill a few deer and they did just fine. I dont know if theyve changed that bullet since though.

Good on deer and very accurate.  Have taken 12 deer from 25 to 75 yards.
Shoots tighter groups in my SRH.  Such a good price you can afford to practice a lot.
I think that's the key.

I've shot a couple of does with that bullet out of a 44 mag.  One broad side pass through at about 70 yards  and one quartering away about 40 yards and the bullet stuck under the skin on the far side.  Shot one of my best groups at 100 yards with that bullet too.

Good luck,

They're a good accurate jacketed bullet for a good price. They used to be quite a but cheaper before the fire. Altho I like the JHP for range use, since I used the same cartridges in the .44 carbines as I use in my  629s for deer, I prefer their JSP for hunting. Same load recipe, same price and same POI as the JHP, and gives complete pass thru with both revolvers and long guns.

They do seem to shoot accurately from my 44 mag but I did notice that they are a little smaller than the XTPs.  The Noslers just fall through my chambers without slowing down while the XTPs have to be pushed through.  In theory I think that would make the XTP a more efficient bullet with more accuracy potential.  Any thoughts?
