45 colt/410 question
« on: April 05, 2012, 05:41:42 AM »
I know the chamber is longer in the 45 colt/ 410 gun, but will it chamber and shoot the 454?

Not safely at Casull pressures, besides the cast iron SB1 frame, the barrel is made of mild 1137 steel for shotgun/Colt pressure under 14kpsi, the Casull is rated at 65kpsi(50kcup).

Please listen for a second and don't take this the wrong way. I have a 45/410 and they will chamber 454's, it'll chamber 460's too but if you tried to shoot either one of them from this barrel/frame combination it'd probably blow up in your face. Like Tim says the barrel is made of softer steel and it's a shotgun frame. Please don't shoot 454's out of it!!
There are lots of threads about loading for this barrel and some people have gotten good results fireforming different brass to fit this chamber and take up the freebore.
Get ahold of Gendoc and pick his brain... he has done lots of testing with this barrel and he won't steer you wrong.

These barrels usually aren't noted for their accuracy but I think alot of that is due to only having a bead sight on them. I sent mine out and had it drilled and tapped for a Remington front ramp with fiber optic insert and a WGRS rear sight. It's a nice setup and I can shoot a pretty good group with it now. It's worth the effort to install some decent sights or even better a scope rail for optics.

These things can be alot of fun... just realize their limitations and be careful. ;)

I don't have one, was just wondering.
So even on a SB2 frame, the barrel would not be safe?

If you believe cartridge drawings, a 444M round will fit in the 45/410 chamber also but once again if it ain't stamped on the barrel, don't put it in the chamber.

I was just wondering because I have heard of folks reaming the 45 colt barrels out to the 454, I knew of the difference in the frames, didn't know of the difference in the barrels.

All modern H&R centerfire rifle barrels are 4140 alloy, shotgun barrrels including the 45/410 and rimfire barrels are 1137 mild steel.

What about 454 in 45 70 barrels. Is it safe and what about accuracy with that much free bore ?

Won't work, a Casull round will drop completely into a 45-70 chamber with headspace and room to spare, a .452" bullet will drop right thru the barrel in three of mine, the Casuall uses .452-.454" bullets, the 45-70 uses .458".

What barrels are some members reaming ? Did H&R make a rifle barrel in 454 or 45 colt ?
