If it is off enough to see it's not likely to boresight. What kind of bases do you have? Can you use Burris Z-rings with the offset plastic inserts? They're good for solving problems like this sometimes.

Yes, Burris Z rings with the offset bushings is the way to go with your problem.  Usually you just lap rings in with a bar and grinding compound, but is far easier and better for your scope to just buy a nice set of the Burris rings.  Larry

The gunsmith that did the work passed away. and they are tallys. i thought of the z-rings, but that wont help.

Give Fred a call at 4D, he doesn't list one, but he may have one.  ;)

The Tally bases should have the same screw spacing as Weaver bases if the gunsmith used the right ones. Once you have Weaver bases you can use Z rings.

If you linebore rings that are misaligned enough to be noticeable they will hold a scope without putting stress on it but it will likely not boresight. Then your rings will be ruined and you will have to do something else anyway.

Do you know a good gunsmith you can consult with to offer good advise after seeing the rifle?

Burris makes the rings with the plastic inserts in both weaver and the turn in type bases, I cannot imagine a problem that can be fixed with a reamer and not by the use of the offset plastic insert type rings.  Larry

I want to keep the tally bases. one base is slightly twisted, but seems to be centered. im sure the reamer would work. not against the z-rings, just like the tally look.

Make sure that you keep us informed of how you do this.  I have lapped lots of rings to make sure that they contact the scope preperly, but if you need to use a reamer to get the rings centered on the bore (if I am understanding you correctly) I have doubts that your rings will stll be an apropriate size to hold the scope when you are done.  I also wonder how you are going to fixture the action.mounts and rings and align them correctly with the machine you are going to use to power the reamer.  Hand reaming them will not change alignment.

I also wonder how you are going to fixture the action.mounts and rings and align them correctly with the machine you are going to use to power the reamer.  Hand reaming them will not change alignment.

One setup I saw (but never used myself) to ream one out-of-alignment ring to a straight one used a standard 1" machine reamer with a square ground on the end for a tap handle. A long bushing with a 1" OD and an ID to fit the reamer shank was made.

The bushing was secured in the straight ring (with the reamer in it). This lined the reamer up so one could carefully hand ream the bad ring.

I don't imagine the above would work very well if the bad ring were way off though, and it would no doubt work better on aluminum than steel rings.

The only time I had to line up one ring on 1/2 of a two-piece mis-mounted base, it was straight enough to lap in with a 1" bar by using grease on the straight ring and valve grinding compound on the bad one until I got ~80% contact where the ring clamped the scope tube.

Would it not be better to use something like the Leupold Gunsmithing bases that can be drilled to suit the action holes that way the base can be fitted correctly and central so the rings are in proper alignment.

That is what I was thinking.  If the bases don't line up then make bases that do.  Lap the rings and you are good to go.

Contact Talley and explain the problem. They may be able to make a base for you that will correct the problem or just make you a base that's not predrilled so a local gunsmith can drill it to match the holes.
