Updated today at 1:37 PM        Gallery  See all 9 photos »  LOS ANGELES (AP) -- California corrections officials have released a new photograph of convicted cult killer Charles Manson that shows the 77-year-old with long hair, a shaggy beard and a swastika scar on his forehead.
The photo was taken last June and released Wednesday. The buzz cut he had in his last picture is gone, his hair and beard are now long and gray. He's had the carved swastika scar for decades.
Manson is scheduled for his 12th parole hearing next week. He's serving a life sentence at Corcoran State Prison for the killings of nine people, including the 1969 deaths of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six other people in cult attacks.
Three of his followers also are serving life sentences. A fourth, Susan Atkins, died in prison in 2009.

I've heard that argument Kimber. Bunch of hogwash. All the doctors visits, meals, legal fee's,usually from a state paid attourney. And, I'm not including the actual prison costs, due to it would have to be divided up to however many prisoners are in the prison. A dose of drugs,(maybe $50) bullet,($1) or hanging, ($10,but, it can be used many times!) Maybe you can convince a few, but not to many here. gypsyman

There are some here that could not be convinced 1+1=2 if they thought otherwise.

Right Gypsyman, that is just an argument used by the anti death penalty crowd to sway public opinion in their favor. They don't tell the whole story behind the costs. The costs they mention are court costs from all the appeals that a convicted person gets.
For instance the kill for thrill murders, that Travaglia and lesko committed over 30 years ago. They shot and dumped a man into a lake, they shot and killed a women who picked them up hitch hiking, they tied a rock to a man and threw him into a lake to drown, and then raced past a local town police officer enticing him to chase them. When the officer walked up to the car they shot and killed him. The jury found them guilty and they were sentenced to die. 30 plus years later they are still alive in jail.
If they had been put to death after their sentence, the cost to tax payers would have been small. Add all the cost of appeals, lawyers, and housing the scum.
A state police officer Tom Tridico who originally testified in the case, has had to testify nine more times, and at 81 years old is still not done.
The cost is high, but to execute them costs very little. A 20 foot length of 3/4 inch manila rope can be had for under 20 bucks.
The same people that think that we shouldn't execute murderers, are the ones that are adamant about and see nothing wrong with killing innocent unborn children. Kind of shows how twisted their thinking is.
Those people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.    Wm. Penn

I am torn on the death penalty. Every once in a while someone comes along who just needs to be killed but sometimes  I think life in prison is a fate worse than death. Look at old Charlie in that photo. He almost looks as if he is broken and lifeless. Maybe he has had a few too many nocturnal visitors in prison who are bigger and badder than he ever was.

HORSEPATOOT. Don't be ridiculous. Mansons guilt was proven guilty and confessed. Dig a hole, bullet in the head, end of problem. Now how expensive is that??
LAKOTA. Maybe a life sentence is worse for the murderers, but why should our tax $s pay all their bills?? Not fair to the tax payers and families of the victims. POWDERMAN.  :o :o
