Question about barrel fitting ?
« on: April 07, 2012, 07:50:08 AM »
Before any one suggerts the FAQ's , I've read and reread the whole section. I'm looking for an opinion on fitting a shotgun barrel to my rifle frame. The shotgun barrel lacks a small bit to lock up. I've carefully relieved the pivot notch but seem to have reached a point of no further progress. In your experience is there possibly another area I should check or just proceed with carefull sanding of the notch. When the barrel reaches the stopping point just before lock-up,it stops very abruptly and quite solidly like it has made firm contact with something. Opinions/suggestions please. Thanks in advance for your help. :-\

I had to slightly file the bottom rear end of the barrel lug because it was hitting the inside of the receiver on one barrel fit.  Try lipstick on the bottom of the lug to see it if gets on the inside of the receiver.

YOU MUST REMOVE THE EJECTOR TO FIT THE BARREL.  Don't ask me how I know.
Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

When you have the barrel closed, look and see if the barrel sets down into the receiver. It should be about 1/32" to 3/64" below the top of the receiver. The Breach and the receiver face should touch from top to bottom. If they do you are completely closed and my need to remove some from the barrel lock notch.

When the barrel reaches the stopping point just before lock-up,it stops very abruptly and quite solidly like it has made firm contact with something.

I'm guessing the barrel it's stopping against the face of the reciever, like the barrel is too long.

So ,should I continue to remove small amounts from the barrel pivot to relieve this problem ?

If that is indeed the problem.
I like to use candle soot to blacken the area, actually I have an oil lamp and turn the wick high so I can get a sooty flame. Some guys use lip stick.
Get the soot all over the end of the barrel, then try to install. Then the place where it's rubbing on the frame will show up, the soot will rub off.
You should find where it's stopping before removing any more metal.
It's easy to file metal away, but difficult too UN-file.
