Michigan's hog purge
« on: April 07, 2012, 09:11:22 AM »
The Michigan DNR is going farm-to farm seizing and shooting pigs that don't fit the Winnie the Pooh piglet model. Posession of heritage pig breeds, even in feedlots for hormone free-grassfed pork is now a felony.  I have been vocal in the Michigan region forum; if too much, I apologize. This seems a little silly, but these admin rules and seizures are DNR rules, not legislative law.  It seems to me to be out of hand, and runaway government. It is/was also the closest I could go for hog hunting, even if it is high fence.  Too bad!

Sad really.  Not knowing why the MDNR is waging this war is probably exacerbating the issue.  Pretty good likeness of Rodney Stokes though!

The State once eradicated all white tailed deer in several Counties in Florida because cattle was infected with tick fever.

Quote
The State Live Stock Sanitary Board was created in 1923 (Ch. 9201, Laws) to regulate Florida's livestock industry. The board regulated the import and export of meat and livestock, inspected meat sellers, and controlled animal diseases such as cattle tick fever, hog cholera, and tuberculosis.

One of the major functions of the Board was the eradication of tick fevers. In the early 1900s, the Texas Tick fever entered Florida from imported cattle. By the 1920s, the State Livestock Sanitary Board was requiring all cattle owners to dip their cows with an arsenic solution every 14 days. The state reimbursed them 3 cents for every head of cattle. In 1935, the tropical tick fever broke resulting in more treatments and Board-led destruction of thousands of white-tail deer which they believed harbored the tick. The program was continued until the 1950s.

The State then purchased deer from various sources, including Wisconsin, for reintroduction where the depleted resource was created.  What a racket...

How ironic.... State of Wisconsin DNR is erradicating whole counties of deer for the"solution" for CWD. Junk science is what Uncle Ted called it.

Utah DWR came in the back door too, May 8 is our deadline. Not enough people out here even know one 'can" hunt pigs in Utah, so there is no outcry.
I think Uncle Ted has property with pigs on it in MI also, I wonder how he is involved in opposing this "Hog Purge"?

They're trying to get rid of pigs cause Obama is a muslim and they think pigs are unclean! Well,,, it's almost as absurd as the real reason they are doing it. Matter of fact I don't know why they are doing it. Guess big government doesn't need a reason, they just do it.  Typical out of control government.

What do you mean?
Michigan DNR has outlawed certain breeds of heritage pigs, and is closing down high fence hunting of European-style hogs. The misinformation I was talking about, is the execution of that goal, (how the department personel are accomplishing it) not the letter of the law.

What do you mean?

What I mean is that this poster has got to be a joke.

Distinct skeletal structure? All vertebrates have that.
Straight OR curly tail? All pigs with tails are now invasive.
Erect OR floppy ears? All pigs with ears are illegal.
Any characteristics not currently known to the DNR?  Get real.

Some 8th grader in Iowa made this poster, and he's got y'all all worked up about it.  The icing on the cake for me is the apostrophe in juveniles.  Get real.  It's either that, or the Michigan DNR is comprised of serious, serious morons.  I'm an optimist, so I'll cast my lot with the former.

For the record, I called the number at the bottom of the poster, but no one answered the phone.  We'll see if they return my call tomorrow.

It would appear that the head of the Michigan DNR has been given a new appoint ment. (Not fired :)   and three others in high DNR positions ared under
Investigation. Meanwhile hog hunting continues.

And just where are all of these feral hogs in MI?  I have been asking every deer, bird, and other small game hunters, as well as land owners for the past 5 years if they have spotted any or even seen sign of rootings, etc..all have come up with the same answer...NADA!.

the feral hog problem in michigan is way way way overstated.
in the lower pennisula there are three regions that a few, 3 or 4 herds of a few pigs each have been seen, and fewer still have been shot.  just like the deer baiting / no baiting / some baiting issue, the mi dnr is out of control
