HSM Ammo 45-70 405 gr.

I bought some HSM ammo basically because they were cheap and now I'm a bit leery of shooting them out of my 45-70 NEF.H&R Handi Rifle, they are 405 gr. Round Nose Lead  Heads, I usually shoot Hornady Lever Revolution or Superperformance with perfect accuracy, but I can't afford to shoot those unless its hunting season. Any other Ideas, just want to target shoot and have no way of reloading yet so I'm at the mercy of factory ammo!

why are you "leery of shooting them"....
they were made for the 45/70 right ?

I'm leery because I don't know that much about pure lead ammo. I'm use-to the copper jacketed stuff, just want to make sure I don't dirty up a nice clean barrel! Also from what I've picked up for reading re-loaders posts they recommend lubing and such, is that something I need to worry with or is that aimed more toward the black powder crowd.

Thanks for the help, I hope by the time I'm out of the ammo that I can have a buddy reload some more for me, or maybe I'll be set up to do it myself by then.

Don't diddle around.  You're wasting money.  Start reloading now.  The .45-70 is a great one to start with.  Save your brass and you'll be reloading it for a fraction the cost of ammo.  Get a couple of manuals.  Lee, Hornady, Speer, Lyman etc.  IMR4198 and 350 or 405 grain bullets are a good starting place.  Good luck.

My favorite way to remove lead from a CF RIFLE barrel! 8)    I once leaded up a 1911 chambered in 45 Super and launched a factory jacketed to "clean" the bore.  I was shooting through a chrony and this factory stuff was dead nutz on 1,300 FPS @ 10'.  The first cleaning round was only 1,100 FPS and the gun almost got me in the forehead. :P   Next round back to 1,300 FPS.   Method will work just don't let the lead build up too much.

Will you buddy allow you to load some rounds on his equipment under his supervision? If so , you can save some money and begin to learn about re-loading. Load them slow enough so they don't lead up your barrel.

most of the 45-70 gun owners I know shoot hardcast bullet when reloading limit velocity so leading is not much of a problem and have a heck of a lot of fun. just shoot and clean the barrel for the next trip out shooting.once you shoot the 45-70 you can't get enough so you have to do it the cheapest way you can.

I have shot 4 boxes of it through my BC. It is decent ammo. The 405 lead is a bit dirty but that is expected of lead ammo properly loaded. Shoot a few rounds of the jacketed stuff after a clean up and scrub the barrel a bit,PRESTO your as good as new. They use Starline brass which I am liking a lot as an added benefit!

Thanks for all the help, Its the reason I joined GBO in the first place, also my friend will let me learn to reload with his stuff he's the one that got me hooked on the 45-70 in the first place, I actually went out and bought one just like his and now my wife who also hunts has decided that she likes it too, so I just recently picked up a .444 Marlin for myself.  We like them due to the fact that we hunt in the dense woods with lots of brush, and trust me when I say a couple of small to medium oak branches don't do much to stop a 45-70 round at 50 yards.  The same branches stopped my .308 and .3006 on two separate occasions over the last few years that I hunted back home in the mountains of Eastern KY, before that I was in central KY playing sniper for whitetails in the flat land and small rolling hills, up there it wasn't uncommon to get a 400+ yd shot, not that I would try such an idea ;D (Stats 8-9 at 350+yds all dead with one shot from either there 300 Win mag or 30-06 Spring.)

The HSM 400 gr. Speer ammo performs very well in my Marlin 1895 STBL. Less than inch groups, three shots, at 100 yds. sighted in 2" high.
Very reasonable price and exceptional quality and accuracy.
