The REAL BC Carbine
« on: April 08, 2012, 06:08:23 AM »
Don't think a lot of the Buff Hunters used a BP Colt 45 cartridge as their primary weapon.  The recorded history does say the 50-70 Govt. play a part in the great hunt.  Maybe HR1871 should have chambered their BC Carbine in 50-70 Govt? ;)

Yeah Tom, and what length did you cut it at?  Looks like it might be 18 or 20 inches.

I too wish H&R had done a 50-70.
That way it would be much easier to convert to a 50-140!!!!

In factory trim, it is not a big recoiling caliber. With a bit over 20K psi limit is no speedy hi pressure offering. It's a big push maybe on par with a  hi brass 20 ga.

The BC is nice, have almost bought one a couple of times at gun shows.  I already have a Handi in 45-70 that shoots nice, and really does a number on Bears.  I was really on the verge of buying a BC when I found the H&R Trap Door Springfield in 45-70.  Don't see a BC in my future now, I really like the Trap Door.

Pete,

18.5" barrel.

It is a real 50 cal rifle barrel at .512"/.501".  The 500 S&W barrel is a pistol 50 cal so about .01" smaller diameter.

It is a BPCR only barrel that I had built.  Accurate did a test with the 50-70, 550 grain LRN and 65 grains FFG (IIRC) and recorded 22,500 psi.  The load data i am using is less than 20K psi.

No chrony but with a compressed load of BH209 & a 450 grain LFN should be in the 1200 to 1300 fps range.  Before the barrel was chopped it was zeroed at 100 yards and had, by my eyeball, about a 12 to 18 inch drop at 200 yards judging the POI (dust cloud in the berm) versus POA.

Recoil is light enough one could shoot this gun all day without complaining much.  I haven't shot it yet with the short barrel and BC furniture so I may change my mind about the recoil give the steel buttplate.

Men I am a rookie at the H&R game but I do have a Buff Carbine.....the 50-70 has always interested me.  I guess a poor mans version could be a Handi in .500 S&W loaded with hard cast and 65 grains of FFG....I know the 50-70 is .515" bullet diameter and that the .500 is .500".....does anyone know the correct mold for a .500-.501" 400 grain cast bullet ?  Again I don't know nothing about nothing so I am here to learn......

I think this means you are in charge. ;D

The 500 S&W is a smaller case than the 50-70 so less powder.  Loading BP is a whole nother animal but if you want to duplicate 50-70 velocity in a 500 S&W I would think that Trail Boss powder would be a place to start.  Go to www.hodgdon.com and look at their data for trail boss, it has it's own section plus there is TB data included for some of the cartridges in their reloading database.

I am sure there are folks here with Handi 500 S&W & cast lead experience that can help. Also, there is the GBO Cast Boolit forum that would also be a good resource.

good luck

As BB stated, the 50-70 has a slight case capacity edge over the 500S&W, 75.1gr water for the 50-70 compared to 64.8gr water for the 500S&W. Here's a visual comparison of several big bore chamberings that have been done or will be done in the Handi. Concerning the 700gr 500S&W loads, I've shot them in mine before I had it rechambered to 499HE, they ran about 1450fps with a full case of Lil'gun using KDM data and Range Rick bullets, unfortunately Richard is no longer making the bullets, I have a couple dozen left that I'll be running thru the 499HE which will push them about 1800fps @ 40kpsi.  ;)

Six big bore Handis don't seem like enough to me.  I guess I better get moving on #7. ::) 8) ;D

BTW, my 44 Bodeen, at 91.5 grains of water capacity, and a COL of 3.27" is very offended about the 0.458" requirement to be a big bore. >:( ;) ;D
