I think this hornet may be a shooter
« on: April 12, 2012, 06:59:12 AM »
Well I finally made it out with the new hornet.  I only had a chance to shoot it at 50 yrds.  This was off of a rolled up gun case.  It was an impromptu range session.  I shot 6 groups of 3 and 4 groups of 5 and I am pretty happy with it.  I plan on tweeking some loads for her now.
Handis: .17 mach2 (x2), .22 lr, 22 hornet, .22 jet, .223, .243, .270, .280, .357 max (x2), 35 remington, 35 whelen, 45-70, 445sm, 30-30, 410, 500 S&W, 50 AK

Welcome! Better check first, the Hornet has been discontinued, but they may still have accessory barrels in stock tho, just a heads up, get it while you can.  ;)

It's not the first time it was discontinued, maybe if they get enough complaints/requests for it, they'll make more of em.

I inherited one from My dad. Think he obtained it in the 70's. it was his ground hog gun. I got it out of the safe and am using it to teach my grandsons long range shooting. They just love it .. We bought some of the Hornady VMax 35 grain ammo for it and have been having fun. 4 generations have enjoyed this gun. I hope you have as much fun with yours that dad did with his. Try the VMax's they shoot very well in Dad's.

opps . Looking at your targets I see you have already tried the VMax's. Very good results. Are you going to hunt varmints with it?

13.0 gr under the Hornady 35 or 40 gr. V-max.  My newer barrel likes the 40, others have had better groups with the 35.  Check other bullets as well, I just like a lot of the Hornady products.  13.0 gr. fills the case pretty full but will compress some.  Good luck!  DP

I just started on the Handi Hornet. Have only tried 12 gr of Lil Gun with 30 gr Varmint Grenades. Good so far. I have a few more 12 and 12.5s loaded but has been windy here. I never had much luck with the 35 V-max in other Hornets but all here seem to, so I will try them in the Handi sometime. Was waiting on 13gr to see what these do.

Do you have the 22" 1:9 twist? I have the Superlite. May try to get a new 22"er. Thought I had enough Hornets BUT ;D  That's good shootin, hope you get that at 100.
It is a fun little cart. even with its quirks.

For 22 Hornet light bullet loads I like W296 or H110 with a pistol primer. I have had very good results using a 34 grain MidSouth Varmint Nightmare over 12.4 grains of W296 in Winchester cases and a CCI 500 primer. This is a load very similar to a load right out of the Speer reloading manual #14. The only difference is in the manual they used a 33 grain TNT Speer bullet of course. The 12.4 grains is a starting load, so there is not a lot of case stretching going on and the primers are not flattened. I get very good velocity, accuracy and case life. If you shoot 40 grain bullets or heavier, Lil'gun gives better velocity than W 296/H110, but I never got very good accuracy and had wild pressure swings. I have not figured out how I get this, and most everyone else gets such good and consistant results. I do know that Lil'Gun has a lot of static electricity in it. It sticks to the sides of my powder measure, worse than any other power I have used. I have got good results in other cases, including 22K Hornet, 221 Fire Ball and 357 Max, just not the 22 Hornet.
BTW: I use the same load (WW case, CCI 500 primer, 34 grain MidSouthVM) in a 22K Hornet , only I up the W296 to 12.8 grains. Great accuracy and low pressure and in the neighborhood of 3150 fps out of my 20" barrel.

Good Luck and Good Shooting
