Anyone here had any experience with this cartridge?? Im curious, iv shot the 458 win mag own a 45-70 I load hot but am really intrigued with the 460 mag. Just how brutal on the shooter is it?? Im thinking the 458 win mag generates something like 65 ft lbs of recoil energy and the 460 is something like 120. Anyone have one or get a chance to shoot one??

I own one - and a fellow told me years ago that you remember every shot you have taken with one. He was correct. You will not have any trouble telling when it goes off. I own .45/70 handguns, and have owned several .458's in the past - the recoil of the .460 is brutal and severe - you will, however, live through it.....and you will remember each shot.

I own one, bought it about 10 years ago. I shoot it on the bench but use a bag of lead shot between the butt and my shoulder. . I have gotten 3/4" groups with it.
I have a lot of fun watching other people shoot it off hand. I tell them to hold on tight and stay away from the scope, if anyone ever gets too close to the scope they will get cut badly. I usually load it with Hornady 350 grain bullets. Factory 500 grain bullets really kick hard.

:grin: Interesting forearm to handle. Recoil is jut a tad over 120 foot pounds , As a point of interest.I believe a 30-06 is about 17foot pounds.and a 12 ga 3.5 inch is around 25 to 30 foot pounds. Shot one many times.......and yes.......you will remember every time you pull the trigger. For fun.......put three or two inna mag,and one up the spout...Now................see how fast you can tickle the trigger and work the bolt and at the same time hit what you are attempting to shoot at....I will also assume( we all know what that does) that the rifle in question does not have any type of recoil damper on it Stay safe................King

I own one that has the muzzle brake on it. The recoil on these is really overated! Just more like a big push, the way the stock is designed, it slips away from your face. I shoot 450 gr & 500 gr factory loads. I love mine & wouldn't take for it! They are a hoot to shoot, go for it! Regards Mike :grin:

I'm more interested in what you intend to hunt with it.

I have one of them also. I love my 460 its fun to shoot yes I said fun.
It doesn't hurt ya like many people have read of written about it.

I have shot 12ga. shotguns with 3.5"mags that pound you way harder than my 460.

Myself I hunt anything I want with it :grin:

I have shot many things with my 460 and hunted Pdogs, Yoties, and Deer so far.
I plan on going to Texas this spring and hunt Hogs and Yoties. Later on this fall I'm going to Arkansas to hunt Hogs and Black Bear and maybe a deer.

I do reload for this brut to get peak versatility out of it.

I load:

Rem. Bulk 300gr. JHP for fun(have killed Pdogs, Yoties, Snakes, Turtles, Skunks, wild cats, pop cans, 2little bottles and Paper)

Hornady 350gr. RN for fun and hunting (have killed everything listed about plus deer.)

Hornady 500gr. RN Pure Fun (have only killed Snakes, Skunks, wild cats, pop cans, 2little bottles, Paper and Blocks of Ice.)If you are saying Blocks of Ice?? I shoot a 25lb. block of ice at the local hunter’s education clinic. We put on a Firepower show at the end of the clinic shooting 22rimfire - 460WBY.

Barnes 500gr. X Hunting only. Haven’t killed anything but paper with it.

Barnes 500gr. SOLID Hunting only. Have killed a 12"dia hedge tree and paper.

Swift 500gr. RN Hunting only. Still working out the bugs with this load.

I can't say enough about the 460 it is to say the least my best investment in a firearm I have ever made.

If anyone wants to shoot one let me know with a PM I live just south of Wichita Kansas. I will gladly let you shoot it.

I use fiber optic sights front and rear.
The farthest thing I ever shot was a yotie at a little over 150yards maybe further not much.

Well then, I guess I'm not too bright, because I'd truly admire tuh shoot one.

Talkin' about big recoil, I remember an article written about the .700 Nitro Express by Jim Carmichel of Outdoor Life. He had a chance to fire one at Holland & Holland. As I recall, he fired both barrels but declined a reload. I guess there's a level of punishment that even a confirmed gun nut won't submit himself to. At least not more than once.

I don't want to hurt feelings here. It's just that a 460 is something I wouldn't want to try. Sounds like a good way to get "flinchitus".

While I don't have a .460 Weatherby(YET) I do have a Ruger M77 chambered in the .450 Rigby which is just a footprint behind the .460 Weatherby. Yes the recoil takes some getting used to but nothing that can't be handled with time. Just make sure the rifle fits you and that it weights enough. The addition of a mercury insert helps TREMENDOUSLY. My M77 weights 10 lbs., 13 oz.. complete(no scope - just sling/swivels). The use of a sissy bag helps when shooting from a bench. Standing the recoil is less than my .378 Weatherby. More of a big push. Lawdog

3 or 4 boxes? Sounds like a bucket of PAIN to me. I wouldn't shoot a 460 for a million $. (What am I saying?) I had a 300 Weatherby rifle that I sold because it kicked too hard. The 460 is for Macho men. Men with so much hair on their butt they don't need to wear PANTS!

I'm really sorry that your 300WBY kicked so hard.

I have a friend that I reload for and his Rem. in 270 kicks as hard as my 300WBY.

I have always been told it’s the design of the stock and the fit that determines if a rifle will kick or not.

Actually I need both the .416 and the .460 Weatherby Magnums to fill out my collection of Weatherby Mark V's that I have. This collection is the reason I have the .378. Will I ever hunt with the .378? NO! I have a .375 Weatherby that I intend to use that I like even better than either of my .375 H&H's. My problem with is finding Mark V's in .416 or .460 is that they must never have had a brake installed. I have a .460 located but so far the owner and I are to far apart on the price. So I just keep looking. Lawdog

I have a .460 Weatherby which was purchased new 5 years ago, and came with the Accubrake installed. It's recoil with it is about the same as a .375 H&H which I own 2, a Browning A-Bolt Medallion Grade with BOSS, and a Winchester Super Express Model 70. I also have 2 .458's. A Remington 700 Safari Grade, and a Model 70 Super Express. My .416 Rigby is in a Ruger #1 and it's felt recoil is actually more than the .460 with the brake. My Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 has ports, and is quite comfortable to shoot, as is my Magnum Research BFR .45-70 Revolver. I think it's safe to say I like big bores. No, I've never been to Africa, but that doesn't take away the pure FUN of shooting them. Don't listen to all the recoil hype about the .460 Weatherby cartridge. Yes, it's louder with the Accubrake, but the tradeoff is well worth it. One thing worthy of note is stock design on these big bore guns. I'm not talking about shape here, but rather construction. Weatherby takes every precaution to assure stock splitting doesn't happen. It's stocks on their Walnut guns are very well bedded, with a steel rod renforcing the pistol grip area. My Walnut Remington 700 in .458 mag. had zero bedding at all! It's Walnut stock split at the tang in less than 40 rounds. It now wears an H&S Precision Synthetic stock with a full length Aluminum bedding block. I've heard the Ruger 77 Magnums are bad as far as stock splitting goes. I handload for all my big bores because I could not afford to shoot them as much as I do if I didn't. All and all I have more fun with my big bores than with most other guns I own. Bill T.

I have also found the muzzle brake to be very helpfull on my 378 Weatherby. It's a pussycat with the brake on.

By the way, has anyone tried the Graco Recoil Reducer? I am thinking that it would be nice (if it works ) in situations where hearing protection wasn't feasible and the brake should come off. I'm thinking of situations where a hunter might be stalking....
