talk me out of selling.
« on: April 13, 2012, 12:05:03 AM »
I have a savage model 112flv .223  I bought about two years ago. At the time I bought it for the specific reason of shooting prairie dogs while I was in Wyoming. I have since moved back to Fargo,ND and I have shot the firearm maybe 30 times since I have been back. I have really been looking into buying an AR variant in 5.56 and building a 6.8 upper afterwards. I do not own any semi-auto rifles other than rim-fires and I would like to have one possessed if and before any laws change from being able to purchase what is so called an "assault rifle".

I dont believe by buying the AR I will be shooting it more it just seems more practical from my point of view and the .223 bolt is seeming less practical. Im thinking of using the bolt as a trade in down payment on the AR. I guess I want to see if someone can change my mind on getting rid of the bolt. I just dont really see a good reason in keeping it around if I buy a AR.

Just depends on your situation.  Can you afford to keep them both?  Do you like to pack light?  A god rule is "never sell a gun, you might need it someday".  It's a rule I've broken innumerable times, and lived to regret it.

Personally I'd hang on to it, but that's me. Like stated above, I've regretted most every one I let go of. If you DO decide to get rid of it, don't trade it in to a dealer. He can only give you so much on it(usually less than his COST). You'd be better off and do better money wise, selling it in a private sale.

I will have to look at my money situation more when they time comes at the end of the month. I might just keep it as stated. only been one firearm I have every regretted letting go and that was a winchester 1300 combo pack i bought from kmart when they still sold firearms. I dont really become attached to objects at all. BTW I ment i have shot it three times not 30.

What is the rifle used for ? The AR ? Would you hunt with it ?Just target shoot ?
Ruger has one in the 6.8 Chambering .
Frankly I could find more use in a 308 W or even the 338 F chambering .I then could hunt larger game as well as small . Then also use it on a range .
Think what use the gun would serve and then five years from now you will not be in the same boat .
Just my 2 cents

I don't get rid of a firearm unless there is a reason.   You never know when you are going to need your rifle. Unless you need the money to buy the AR, keep the Savage and buy the AR.

I own quite a few guns.  Some people say that makes me a gun "collector."  Nah...I think I'm more of a gun "accumulator."  ;D

It's just hard for me to sell any guns because it seems that each rifle has some personal history with it.

On the other hand, I own several rifles that I have not even shot yet.  Now those I might be willing to sell.  The only exception is that I have an older (yet brand spanking new) Sako 75 Deluxe in .308.  I bought this rifle some years ago.  I'm not sure what year it was built, but this is one of the prettiest rifles out there.  This one also has the reddish rosewood tip.  Although I still have never even shot this rifle, I just can't see myself ever parting with it.
