22-250 IMR 4227 load velocity?
« on: April 13, 2012, 05:47:22 AM »
My egg shoot load/urban coyote load is 16.0 grains of IMR 4227 under a 45 gr. 223 diameter speer Hornet bullet. The barrel length is 24 inches. I know the load is safe as it is just a bit more pressure than is needed to fully obturate the case. The load is very effective on Yotes too. If it is not too windy it gives 1/2 inch groups at 150 yards. I use CCI 250 magnum primers and Winchester cases. Anyone know where I can find the aproximate velocity for this load?

I have a late 70's or early 80's IMR pamphlet and it shows  for the 22/250 with 4227;  a 50gr bullet doing 3140fps using 21.5 grs of powder at 49,300 CUP .

How about a chronograph. ;D
Remember it's where the first bullet goes out of a cold barrel that counts most.

What is your guestimate for a double charge?  That powder and case capacity it is doable without extra precaution.  Just words to add some caution when using pistol powder in rifle case.

I visually inspect each charged case and the powder is measured with a home made dipper so a double charge is unlikely. I would expect a double charge to be WaYY up there though. If I'm not mistaken IMR 4227 was initially created for small rifle cases like the Hornet and Bee.
