Grass in the raspberry bushes.....
« on: April 13, 2012, 11:55:00 AM »
Growing up in the country we had a real garden.  Had lots of berries of various kinds.  The raspberry bushes were always grass free.

Now we live in town.  Raised beds etc... but where our raspberry bushes are it is basically dirt surrounded by lawn.  For those of you who can relate (or empathize) do you keep your bushes free from grass etc or just let them grow?  If you keep grasses out of the bed, how do you do it?

I raise Blueberries, and Blackberries, instead of raspberries, but I keep grasses to a minimum in both.  With the Blueberries I mulch, heavily, and hand pull grasses (aka weeds).  The Blackberries, being cane type plants, I just keep weeds cut back from the patch, and the few weeds that do come up among the canes I either pull up, or if not readily accessible let the canes smother it back.

I just let a lot of them fall off naturally. In a few years they choke out the grass.
