AR15 Conversion
« on: April 13, 2012, 03:53:47 PM »
Are there any AR15s that I can buy in 22lr that I can later just buy an upper for, in order to convert to another caliber?  If so, what brand?

thanks,

As far as I know, all of the " off the shelf" 22lr's are dedicated for that purpose only, so nothing else will work. You would be better served by purchasing a lower receiver for an AR and adding a dedicated 22lr upper. There are several 22lr uppers that are pretty good out there, but as with anything else, you get what you pay for.

Look at the 22lr uppers from www.model1sales.com for an example

Another option is a 223 and a conversion kit only. Ceiner is reported to be a fellow that is hard to deal with and has cycling issues for many. Several others make the same basic design. I have a spikes tactical because it was ss and could be polished a little easier for preventative maintenance. When the complete uppers and full rifles in 22 first came out they just had the same style conversion as I bought. I haven't looked in one lately to see if they have changed them. Most of the factory 22lr have a barrel diameter of .001 less. I imagine it would make a difference shooting match ammo for tight groups off the bench. For normal shooting the difference wont be able to be seen.

dpms makes one that uses a standard lower so adding a 223 upper later wouldnt be a problem.
