Have you ever read the Bible fro cover to cover?
« on: April 15, 2012, 02:30:03 AM »
I mean starting at page one and reading every page all the way to the end with no skipping around?

It seems like most people skip, like only reading the first few books of the old testament, then zooming off to proverbs and psalms, and then creening into the new testament.

I think you lose a lot that way, and I read it over and over from beginning to end, but more frequently returning to favorite sections.

Not yet, but for 2012, our SS teacher challenged us to do the biblegateway.com daily reading plan.
It covers about 2 OT and 1 NT chapters per day. So far I am on track.

Nice things about the plan:
Your choice of translation.
The chapters are tied to days on the calendar, so if you miss a day, or need to read ahead, you can click on the calendar for that day's text.
You can the daily reading sent in an email.

One could start today on Jan 1, read two days worth for next 3.5 months and be caught up.
Or start now, read one days worth and finish this time next year.

Got it saved as a favorite on my droid, so if I can't do it first thing I can read it at lunch or at night.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I think I've read most of it except all those "begat" chapters.

It was very tempting to skip over some of the repetitive parts of the Book of Numbers and how to dress the priests.

I have heard that the Bible is the most owned and least read book. That's a shame, and I think it's probably true.

Very true Sir. YES, I have 3X. Now I mostly skip around to different areas. The 1st time I really had trouble getting through all the begatting, and psalms was a bit hard to concentrate on too. Certain politicians made sure they were seen carrying a Bible around, clinton was a good example. He made a lot of Bible quotes that seemed to be in his personal Bible but nobody elses. I'm on #3 now. That's an interesting point about Clinton because it's an example of how people are easily fooled with references to the bible. When they don't know what's in it, people can make anything up and tell them it's in there. There's also a lot of skullduggery in making quotes where the context isn't told. The early books are about a much more primitive state of man than the later books, and the pattern is an increasing tolerance for others. When people don't understand it, they are more easily manipulated.

Numbers (i.e, 1,2,3, etc not the book of numbers) works the same way. You can baffle a lot of people just by using numbers.

CONAN. Politicians like clinton count on folks not knowing what they Bible says. Lets face it, a prominent well known man known for carrying a Bible makes a statement he says is Biblical, the unwashed believe him, obama does the same thing. I seriously doubt if 25% of Americans have ever read the Bible through even once. They will even wave the Bible around telling how a woman has the right to murder her child, among other things, but they can't show you where God approves of it.  POWDERMAN.  :o :o

About 1990 I started reading The Daily Bible. It divides the Bible into 365 readings. It puts the Bible into chronicological order, so like when you get to the gospels, it mixes them into the best guess as far as time order. For us modern Americans who live by the calander and watch it helps understand.

Then I started reading the One Year Bible. It has 365 readings, some OT some Psalms, some Proverbs, and some NT on every day. Either one of these books is available in several versions.

I have read one or the other every year since I started. When I was working I would go on trips and get behind. I learned not to go back and try to catch up, that just made the daily readings a chore. I would just pick up on the current day when I got home.

Both the books are big paperbacks, and they were on their last legs, so this year I retired them and got the Grace For The Moment Daily Bible for my Kindle. So far it only comes in NCV which is a paraphrase version. I have been wary of it and thought I disagreed in a few places, but I checked up and so far I havn't found any problems. Reading it has made some of the glazed eye reading in the OT more interesting. It also puts Psalms mostly in couplets which I have never seen before, and it kind of put them in a different light.

Hopefully kindle will come out in less questionable versions by next year.

Reading from the Bible every day has become such a part of my life, I think I would be lost if I didn't.

Cover to cover, yes. I love the book of Psalms. King David is one of my favorites. I have read the Gospels dozens of times. Jesus has a certain style of dealing with folks that is awesome.
The apostle Pauls writtings are always my least favorties becuase when I read them I have to examine my life.
I can identify with Peter. Any time he is instructed to do anything he goes fishing and gets reprimanded. :P ??? ;D

Nothing wrong with skipping around the Bible when reading.
I have 4 Bibles 2 of them disciples study bibles KJV and NIV  plus a large concordance. Since a young age I have been a student of the Bible, and I'll be one until my last day. Reading the Bible cover to cover is a great endeavor ,but the study of the Word is a much better goal. Not only do I find myself skipping around I sometimes have 4 Bibles open the concordance plus the I'm online and the phone at the same time. It's not whether you've read the whole thing or not ,but what you've learned from what you've read.

I have one Bible that I have so many slips of paper in marking pages that I had to quit using it because every time I opened it something would fall out. I now use a different one and still mark pages but make myself remove a marker if I want to mark a new one. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I have the KJV and the NIV. I started reading the NIV but haven't made it all the way through yet.
Just my opinion which doesn't mean much but it looks to me like a lot of people twist the bible around to make it mean anything they want.  Don't take that the wrong way. I AM NOT talking about anyone on here.
