What kind of Savage?

I cane across someone with a  somewhat unusual rifle yesterday at a gun show.  I believe the owner said it was a Savage.  It was a light weight rifle, maybe ~6 lbs, relatively short perhaps 16" barrel, in .308 WIN.  It was either a single shot or a bolt action, I don't remember now, but was identifiable by a vented rib and iron sights.  Can someone tell me what this might have been?


Now that I think about it, I believe it was a bolt action.  It had a one piece wood stock.

Was the bolt handle angled forward somewhat instead of swept backward? IIRC Remington had a nice little bolt action carbine, a Model 600 series which they only made for a short time, from 1968 to 1971 or 1972. The Model 600 came with a vent rib and an 18.5" barrel and was a nice compact carbine. One model came with a 20" barrel. I always thought I should have gotten one but they were discontinued before I did. The bolt handle on those was angled forward. They also made a Model 600 without the rib which I would probably prefer, but if I ever find one any model I will try to buy it, and I am by no means a Remington collector, I just think they were a nice compact bolt action carbine and would make a nice truck or woods gun. This series came in Models 600, 660, 600 Mohawk, and 673....<><.... :)

  Sounds like a Rem 600 to me. A cousin of mine has one in .243 that he hunts with. He gets a bang flop every time with it.

That looks very much like what I saw.  The guy was carrying two rifles, so maybe he was telling me the other one was a Savage.  The only difference I can remember was that it had a fairly large front site coming up out of the vented rib (and a rear sight which I don't remember).

This is most likely the sight - Remington used the same Shark Fin sight blade on multiple rifles, the 600 CF series, the Nylon  .22's, and a few other .22 auto's & pumps IIRC.
