.480 Ruger Range Report
« on: January 28, 2004, 11:59:15 AM »
Just got back from range with new barrel for my encore.  Last night I put a Bushnell Elite 2X on it and bore sighted it as well.

Twelve shots fired, six in 10 ring with last 4 very close to bullseye.  However, on the next to last shot the cross hairs in my scope came apart.  Took it back to retailer and he is sending it in for repair.  He said the scope should handle this calibre with no problem.  Used factory loads.

Anyone ever had this happen to them?

I had a Burris 2-7X come loose after 10 shots on a 44 Mag.  I had the scope on a lighter recoiling barrel before with no trouble.  Burris repaired it under warranty and now its on a 300 Whisper.

Yep!

I 'field dressed' an early Simmons 2x with a .375 JDJ barrel.  I was working in a gunshop (with an attached indoor range) at the time, and I was pretty certain that the Simmons wouldn't hold up, but one of the other guys at ths shop was sure it would.  So, we mounted it up in the T'SOB 3 ring mount, bore sighted it and went over to the range.

Shot 1 was in the black at 25 yards, shot 2 was near it, problem with the reticle, it was canted at about 45 degree angle and the scope had a slight rattle to it.  Of course, I had to fire another round  :P   The third shot was off the paper and the scope was now completely black and a big rattle inside.

Took it back over to the shop, we pulled the scope off and sent it back to Simmons, and I went over to the scope case and pulled a Leupold 2x out of the case and never looked back.

I had a Burris 2x7 mounted on a Freedom Arms 475 Linebaugh. I experienced scope failure (inside lens came lose) on the 42nd shot. I sent it back to Burris, they repaired it and then I got rid of it. Rod

If they are not mounted correctly they will ALL come apart and it is not the fault of the scope. Mounted correctly most all of them will survive. What kinda  rings/base did you use? If other than Burris Signature rings did you lap them? Did you see ring marks on scope?

I guess I wasn't aware that the mounting of a scope can make it fail so catastrophically, but all of my scope mounts are lapped, so that might make a difference, but I did it to make sure they tracked as well as they possibly could.  That said, I have a 4x Leupold on my .454 Casull barrel in a set of triple rings by Redfield, I've shot hundreds of rounds through it already, from light as possible to as heavy as I want, and the scope holds perfect.  It's my second Leupold, the other was on an XP-100, but both have been great performers for me.  I have Simmon, Tasco, Elite 3000, and Alaskan Guide scopes on my rifles, no problems with any except Tasco, it fogs up pretty quick.  All of my rile rings are lapped, but the biggest rifle I shoot is also a .30-06, so we're not talking a whole lot of recoil here either.  Just thought I'd put in my 2 cents.
