Glock 20 multi use gun ?
« on: April 16, 2012, 09:47:51 AM »
Consider the possibility of a Glock multi use gun standard or short frame as it meets your need. Adds - Long slide solid top, long threaded bbl. , 3.5 lb conn., up graded springs , plug with push pins , holster to meet your needs and good night sights , maybe XS sights. A good supply of mags and good cleaning kit. With a longer bbl you will get the most out of the 10mm. With a threaded bbl you can use a suppressor if need be. In a good discrete carry bag/case it would travel nicely. Now consider building this gun from a mod 21  ???  then if you kept the parts in the kit you would /could switch to 45 acp if needed. The build could be about $530.00 + gun +sights + mags if you do your own work.
Second option is start with a mod 20 add threaded bbl to existing slide for around $150.00 + mags but this was not the gun I would like to build.
Use , hunting , outdoor protection , home protection , good travel gun for short or long trips. Being a Glock cost is not prohibitive and its construction is both light and somewhat water resistant.
The same concept could be had in both 9mm or 40 S&W from fractory long slide models but it limits the hunting aspect of the gun.
The suppressor not listed in the cost it would be an option for those who see a need or just would like to have one.
Reason for Glock ? well its in reach of more people do to cost and no need for expensive machine work.  ;)

More or less this is my thinking in buying this very model...

But even tho Glocks are cheaper to build, $530 is a hell of a bargin, considering the after market barrel alone is almost $150 for the cheapest and $300+ for the better models alone... Throw in good leather and your into another 100+. Good sites, another $100 add tritium and price goes up. Mags are $25 each on the lo side...

But before all that, you need the gun itself... Good price on a used Glock here is $350-75$ I just paid $400 for a remarkably clean first gen with two hi cap mags and complete box accessories.

Thats $350 gun (used) + $150 barrel + $100 leather + $125 sites = $725 and you don't have any extra mags let alone even ammo to shoot it yet...  ;) :o

Even lil extras like Ext. slide release, Ext. Barrel release, alum barrel shroud, springs, disconnector easily another $100...

I LOVE your thinking. I agree the G 20/21 is a excellent platform to build upon. just kinda poking holes in the finances.  ::) Sorry man. ;)

No holes really , using Lone wolf - Long slide 250 , parts for slide 140 , threaded bbl 125 and mags 13 if you go KCI ( which I have had very good luck with though they tend to not be drop free). Sights are an up grade most used guns need anyway if they were night sights. As for cost the same build in a 1911 would be a bit more and delivery time could be in years . My gun would see hard use as a truck gun , four wheeler gun and boat gun . Not what I would like to subject a  high dollar 1911 to and watch its value go down with each scratch or rust spot.
I can get used Glocks from 300 to 400 depending on condition . We see G21's but so far no G20's on the used rack. We are lucky here , we have two police supply co's . For some reason both will deal on used guns . Hey when they have 4-500 on the shelf they paid under 100 for what do they have to lose ? Funny thing is if they sell new guns to LE they can't sell new guns to the public and the ones who sell new to the public can't sell new to LE . Protected market share .................

LOl agreed!!

Compared to 1911 after market parts and smith charges to work on them the Glock is bargin basement and is NO SECOND FIDDLE!!!! Most guys can work on the Glock with the assistance of a video or armours CD. Where working on the 1911 is possible but somewhat more limited and when help is needed more costly. Simply durability and corrosion resistance is hands down Glock.

I grew up shooting the 1911, I have trained with it and I have instructed with it for a few years now. Only reciently did I jump in with both feet to the Glock. I bought a 23 when they first became avalible but quickly sold it as the ergonomics where far and away different then the 1911. Learning on multiple platforms compromizes both so at that time I choose the 1911. For more then then the last ten years the Glock is about all I have used with certifications and re certifications as its what most PD's issue so the troopers and officers need to qualify shooting them. I have taken years upon years of razzing as I teach the finer points of "Glock" yet wear a Colt commander lightweight. (Most jeers are silenced once I shoot it for them ;) ) I have taken a step back from this training the past couple years. So turning to or back to Glock was and is a natural. I now own a couple and the latest is intended for exactly what you describe.

I just got for boxes of 200g XTP HPs for loading and am working up some loads. So far I am more than thrilled with how the 20 performs!  Next will be to install the lil extras and shoot it allot more. Later a 6" barrel.

Those are good reasons for a g20.  The thought of converting one to 40 and 357 sig is also appealing.

I just purchased a 357 SIG barrel from Lone Wolf and I can't be happier.  It functions flawlessly and it may be the most accurate handgun that i own.  BTW, that is all I changed out.  The mags, springs and all else are stock and they work well.  Another plus is that I can use cast bullets with the Lone Wolf barrel.
You should have said something; I didn't know I had struck a nerve.

yep those bbls can be added , if the org. gun was a M21 then you could have 45 w/slide the 10 . 40 and 357 long slide . a pistol pack !
