Do you think a gun should look Unique?
« on: January 28, 2004, 01:31:42 PM »
I was at a gun show the other week and a lot of the dealers hadG2's.  A couple of times I had to look twice or compare them to the Encores to be sure of what I was looking at.  I think a gun should have a unique look, the old Contenders were a Contender and an Encore was an Encore.  Both unique.

I fault no one for buying a G2, I might own one myself someday, I just have been thinking a lot about how the gun lost its uniques looks and was curious what others thought.

I guess to each their own.  When I look at all three (Encore, G2 and original Contender) it is easy to see the family tree.  All three are neat.  All three work well.

I was in the market for a used original Contender frame when I found that I could get a new G2 locally for the same price as a used frame thru the mail.  The difference in the guns appearance is not a problem for me.  My old Contender has a place in my collection just as my new G2 does.  My guess is that one day an Encore will join them.

Barrel count is at 7 and rising.  My only Contender problem is what to do with all this stuff...

I think my new G2 is unique though you are right, it does look like a baby Encore. I'm not so sure that unique is as important as how it feels in the individual hand and how it shoots for that individual.

Hmmm,
Brings to mind an old saying, "Opinions are like @#$%@*&"
Uniqueness is important from one manufacturer to another.  But a manufacturer of one traditional product want's to make a new product resemble the old in ways that it can be distinctly identified as "their" product. This may not work for the mass market. But I've never considered single shot pistols in rifle calibers a gun for the masses.
It's a niche market. Take for example the Porsche 911,,,, not a car for the masses. While it has changed over the past 40 years it is still very much recognizable as a Porsche 911.  Traditionalists don't like big changes.
