Shootin' too high
« on: April 19, 2012, 06:29:53 AM »
Dang.....my new (1977) Super Sgl. Six 6.5 (?)" shoots too high even with the rear all the way down. Its the stock ramp front, obviously never messed with, and yes, I do know what Im doing. My guess this is why it looks like it was hardly used. Having to hold 1 1/2 pop cans low at 25-30 yds (with Win. bulk HV) is too much!
Id rather have an undercut target front, like on the Mk II and III(?) semi-autos anyway, and can mill the top down on a too tall one for a proper -0- within the rear's adjustment range.
Looks like a screw on swap after looking at a friends piece............now to just find one.
Any comments pro or con?

Ruger made 2 screw-on undercut patridge front sights for the Mk II Targets, in different heights. You want the taller one.  Unfortunately, they are now "obsolete" and not available from the factory. The ones that are available now for the Mk. III series are not undercut like the earlier ones, and are the same height as the screw-on Single-Six ramps.
Your only recourse IMO is to scour the gunshows, gun shops etc. looking for those earlier taller sights. A couple of different heights were also available for the .357 Maximums, and they will also bolt up.
You might also try the Win. 37 gr. hollowpoints (or the later 36 gr. HP's) which may shoot a tad lower in your Single Six than the 40 gr. solids.

Thanx for that info, Ken; I'll mic my sight and keep a ref. in my wallet. If you have one of those tall ones, could you pop it off and give me the OAH with a dial ind. across the base bottom to the top?
I know what you are getting at with 'try different ammo', weight and speeds, but, I really do want my arms to shoot what I have in inventory. When I have found a certain lot to shoot well I have bought in bulk, and those do perform well in a variety of my 22s. The Win 'Expert HV aint the greatest, but has been an economical round that has held its own for me against some higher priced stuff. I must admit, though, I run all through an old Paco Kelly 22 sizer. None just 'fall into' the sizer, but it is easy to tell the way oversize ones!
BTW, I first sort by sight; does the bullet look good?
Next, if Im getting picky, I lightly twist the bullet in the case; I end up with three groups, 'loose',' snuggish', and 'tight' (the tight are my 'match ammo')
Then the sizer.
I feel real good about using even low priced cartridges done this way, and have placed and won some matches. This past weekend I used just such (and also tried my Aguila SE std.vel., but the Winies were better) in my '69 3 screw, 5.5" SS to very much hold my own in a 22 sil. match  ;D . Too bad Kelly isnt still providing those sizers, but any competent machinist can make them.

Woodduck, I shot NRA Bullseye some 30yrs ago and learned a lot!.......Im more than a little good at sorting out if its me or a gun, but there are lots of shooters who need to hear what you said in a topic like this, so goodonya!

Paco is still making them.  It was just reviewed on GunBlast a couple months ago.  ;)

My buddy just bought one of these new, and it's actually a combo.  It shoots .22 mag good, but throws .22 lr into a pattern.  I did some research and found that quite a few found this to be the case with the combo's.  You might check to see if yours is a .22 Combo and if it is, bump the ammo up some if you get the tool.  ;)

Sounds like something Ruger should fix, but after my last adventure with a Kel Tec Su16 with screwed up sights I don't know if I'll ever send another gun back to the factory again or not.

I dont have large groups, they are just fine, and too high so I have to use Tennessee Elevation & hold low to get that group where I want it. Too low for anything but casual plinking. Its awfully hard to hit chickens, or anything else, like this.
And I sure wont send anything back to a factory for a simple screw on sight replacement! Especially at the cost of sending handguns.
Re. the Kelly sizer, it not only uniforms the OD of the bullet, it will put a blunt nose, better for hunting purposes, on the nose, and maybe the new ones can HP it? My interest was in the sizing, and it sure works for such a simple thing. We dont bother with measuring rims on LRs any more, and Ed Harris determined, to my satisfaction some years ago, that it is the fit to the throat ,as in a match chamber, that starts the accuracy (oh, what a surprise). Bulk ammo tends to run larger OD than match ammo, so uniforming it and shooting in a field chamber works for me.

The tall front sight is .435" from the top of the barrel to the top of the sight.

Mine is about .405, and the ramp just doesnt work for my eyes in any light. I flipped it around backwards to get more definition, and it helps except for the little roll at the top that still gets too reflective. I was on the right track, anyway.

Update today: A friend got me the MkII 'tall' sight from Brownells; it measures .420 and is well undercut. A casual test out back had me believing it is printing just above the tip of the front blade now, and 15 to 25ish yds., one handed, with the rear all the way down. It is now usable and will get much more playtime. I will have to paper it, but I know it is hittin' where its lookin' now.

I purchased a new base that fit that had the 3/8 dovetail cut & just picked a white dot sight of the correct height.  I think it was a "short ramp" with the 3/8 dovetail....Midway or Brownells.  Worked fine & got a better front sight. Scott
