Dorys are the simplist style for homemade, I've built several. They are a real practical small boat too. I still have the last one, I plan to teach the grandkids to sail it if I ever get the time. The boat sails, rows like a dream, and pops up on a plane real fast with just a 6hp motor. Only thing I dislike is to sail it has to have a center board trunk which is a pain to manuver around from the front seat. If you didn't want to sail it leave out the centerboard, and it would be a dream with motor and oars.
I got the plans from a book called The Dory Book. An old old book it may be hard to find, but your library could probably find it for you.
