How Was Your Season?
« on: April 20, 2012, 05:40:24 AM »
Just wondering how everyone fared this last season.
Buddy mike and I got out for 4 days last fall.I also got to do a little spring beavering. Though the numbers are nowhere near what I wanted,it was good to get out again.

Season was OK
My northern semi wilderness rat canoe line was short, very windy and blessed with competion. I had two check days in 30-40 mph winds and pulled. Got 34 rats.
Waited for 10 days past our coon opener to start a coon line and there were many out trapping in front of me. I usually take 10-120 coons but this year my total was 80 but caught most from November 10-December 5th so my grade was better and I am actually glad I did not have as many early coons this year.
My big surprise was two of my sloughs have had nice bump in rats so my rat catch was up.

Wound up with
80 coons that averaged $20.87 b4 commission
8 late season grinners that averaged $5.40 b4 commission
229 rats that averaged $12.19 b4 commission (mostly fall rats)
4 mink that averaged $22 b4 commission with 1 female and one very early male

All in all a nice fur check but not as much time on the line as I had hoped for.

I have broken even the last two years in a row.  I used to always loose money, but had lots of fun.  Two years ago I gave all my traps away and quit.  Now I just read about it.

I had a pleasent season and did well on coon for the number of days I trapped. Rats were a disapointment as the numbers were low , just not many to be had. I was happy with what I recieved for the rats I caught, but like others wonder if I'd have done better shipping them. O-well I play that game every year to ship or not to ship?? Most important I enjoyed myself.

Did spring beaver and stayed within 5 miles of home to make it quick and simple.  11 beaver; 4 rats and on my last check a large otter.  I may run a limited number of sets next fall and a lot more next spring if conditions are favorable.  Had lots of fun.

About all of my trapping is land trapping.  If I catch any water animals it is by chance.  My season started in November and went through cat season which ends the middle of February.  I ended up with 43 coyotes -  2 had mange so had to waste them, 6 bobcats, 6 coon and 3 skunks.  This was my best year for the coyotes and cats.  A lot more compitetion this year than other years.  I guess it's a reflection of the higher prices.
Thanks,
Trapper Jack

had a good year, with the mild weather bringing both bad and good.

The good was accessibility- I could drive where ever I wanted to from day one of coyotes to the last day of water.

I had zero rain during 5 weeks of coyotes, and it was nice knowing i could go "way back" without worries.

And on water- think I maybe had 4-5 days all year, where I had to break ice to walk creeks- and that doesn't occur every year!

So that was good- but with good comes bad.

The lack of any weather movement, hurt on the coyote line, and while I took 3 digits again, it was down from last year- with 60-70 degree day and mild nights not a lot of movement.

my new system cut way down on incidentals, and I took less fox, but also les skunks and possum- took 4 possum all year, and 2 were in coon sets.

water I took a few more beaver, simply because I had a few more to take this year, and had a real nice year on rats.

Mink were down for me, but consistent. Again, with the lack of snow cover, I had less mink working the creeks - and thats what I need, since I start mink trapping after everyone else gets the "easy" ones- but didn't have a check I don't think without a least 1 mink. But no big days such as normal winter weather gives me.

Coon also down- confirmed distemper locally, and again, the mild winter kept more coon in the woods, rather than moving to the creeks.

but all and all, a very nice year.
