My faithful Beagles both died within the last 16 months. It's been kind of lonely around here since December when Ernie died. Bert had died just over a year before. Went to the Animal Control shelter yesterday, they had just received a new Mini Pincher, and he is cute. He is a two year old, very fat, but also very active. His owner died, and the disabled elderly spouse is unable to take care of him. I received all his papers, too bad they require he be neutered before adoption. I understand the reasoning behind the requirement, but it is a shame exceptions can not be made. He has some good genes that could be passed on.
Anyway the Animal Control folks are delivering him to the Doc May's office this morning. Surgery will be done this morning as well. I can pick him up after 4:PM this evening. When I called the wife yesterday she was totally against me getting him. It took some convincing to get her to come to the Animal Shelter to take a look at him, during lunch. She said I don't like him, he's going to be your dog, I'm having nothing to do with him. She left in a huff.
As I was driving from Fairbanks to North Pole last evening she called me. She said most of the items we used for Bert and Ernie are too big for a Mini Pin. Turn around and meet me at PETCO, we have to have a smaller cage and he has to have a collar. I turned around and drove back to Fairbanks and all the way across town. We arrived at Petco at the same time. Right away she went straight to the collars, she picked out a black leather spiked collar. I said "Why, I don't like spiked collars". She says, "He's a tough looking little guy, he needs a spiked collar to make him look really tough". then she went and got a new cage, a bed, harness, a bunch of toys, treats, a light weight nylon leash, (The ones for the Beagles are too heavy) a new retractable leash, (again the one for the Beagles is too heavy). She also picked out a cover for the car seat and a seatbelt harness, so he is protected when he goes for a ride on the car or truck. He has to be strapped in just like a child.
I mentioned I was thinking of taking him with me next week to set up my Bear Baiting stands. Today she is looking for hearing protection for dogs for when I shoot the guns in his presence. She says she does not want him going deaf like all her Brother-in-laws Labs when they get old. She thinks it is from being around shooting that causes them to loose their hearing when they get old.
Gee, for it being my dog, she sure has taken a lot of interest in his well being. I'm just looking for a buddy to share a tree stand with, one that can hear better than I do. And someone to spend the day with.
