"New" Shikari owner
« on: April 20, 2012, 09:20:46 AM »
Picked up a 24" bbl version of the M155 "Shikari" recently, for a whopping $179.00.  It's in very good shape overall, with an excellent bore.  Someone replaced the factory sights with a flip-up Lyman rear sight (adjustable for elevation only), and a red fiber "ray bar" sort of front sight, manufacturer unknown.  The serial number is AM316226 - whatever that may tell us.

Anyways, I dug out my old .45-70 Lee Loader and some components (use to have a M1884 Trapdoor) and loaded up some black powder rounds.  (As primarily a muzzleloading guy, that's the only kind of powder on hand!)  Took it out to the local range and blazed away at 50yds without tinkering with the sights at all.  The results are below.  It's going to be a fun gun!

Very nice lookin' Shikari!  Open sights and a big bore rifle with a plinking load, it doesn't get any better.

I have one in .44 Mag with a 20gauge shotgun barrel.  It started out as 158 Topper in 20ga in the mid 1970's.  Had the factory fit the 44
Mag Shikari barrel to it.  Most "fun" gun I own.  At family gatherings the kids shoot it with my cast 421429 250gr and 6.5gr of Red Dot
powder.  Soft shooting as a .22rf.  Put the 20ga barrel on we shoot hand thrown clay targets.  The kids won't leave me alone till all the ammo is shot up!!!  It's a good shooter too.

I loaded two different batches of BP ammo, one with 60 grains of FFg, the second with 55 grains FFFg.  Both with 405 grn LFN cast bullets over a fiber wad.  There was no noticeable accuracy difference at 50 yards (though the FFFg loads seemed to kick a little harder).

I filled the butt-stock cavity of the rifle with no. 6 shot to add some weight to it.  Recoil was comfortable with the BP rounds....

I like FFFg loads for cartridge guns.  It seems like I get a little more consistent performance with the smaller particle size.  Do you use a drop tube?  I noticed an increase in my BP loads accuracy with using one and loading with slight compression.  I do about a 1/16th of an inch, but I've heard of guys doing as much as 1/4".

I don't have a drop tube, so I just tapped the case on the table top a bunch of times to settle the grains, inserted the wad, and compressed it a tad with a short length of dowling.  Hardly precise, but I won't be shooting any farther than 100 yds, either!  ;D

I have a kitchen plastic funnel attached to a blowgun tube and hang it on my pegboard backer of my reloading station.  I used to just hold it by hand and point it at the Lee red plastic funnel on the brass.  hehe  New way works much better.

Nice pick up at a great price.  With open sights, minute of deer gun, looks like it's gonna be a keeper.  Best of luck with your new toy.

Thanks!  Does the serial# indicate the date of manufacture?

This is kinda cool: just picked up from Ebay an old "American Rifleman" article on the Shikari, with exploded parts view, disassembly instructions, etc:
