The Nuge pleads guilty

Ted Nugent agrees to plead guilty in illegal killApril 20, 2012, 11:19 PM ESTANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Rocker and wildlife hunter Ted Nugent has agreed to plead guilty to transporting a black bear he illegally killed in southeast Alaska.
Nugent made the admission in signing a plea agreement with federal prosecutors that was filed Friday in U.S. District Court.
Calls seeking comment from Nugent, his Anchorage attorney, Wayne Anthony Ross, and assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Schmidt were not immediately returned.
The plea agreement says Nugent illegally shot and killed the bear in May 2009 on Sukkwan Island days after wounding a bear in a bow hunt, which counted toward a state seasonal limit of one bear.
According to the agreement, first reported by the Anchorage Daily News, the six-day hunt was filmed for his Outdoor Channel television show, "Spirit of the Wild." In the hunt, Nugent used a number of bear-baiting sites on U.S. Forest Service property, according to the agreement.
The document says Nugent knowingly possessed and transported the bear in misdemeanor violation of the federal Lacey Act.
Nugent, identified in the agreement as Theodore A. Nugent, agreed to pay a $10,000 fine, according to the agreement, which says he also agreed with a two-year probation, including a special condition that he not hunt or fish in Alaska or Forest Service properties for one year. He also agreed to create a public service announcement that would be broadcast on his show every second week for one year, the document states.
"This PSA will discuss the importance of a hunter's responsibility in knowing the rules and regulations of the hunting activities that they engage in, which is subject to the review and final approval, prior to any broadcast, by a representative of the United States Attorney's Office in the District of Alaska," the agreement says.
Nugent, who signed the document April 14, also agreed to pay the state $600 for the bear that was taken illegally, according to the agreement. He would still need to enter the plea in court and have the plea be approved by a judge.
Nugent — a conservative activist famed for his 1977 hit "Cat Scratch Fever" — drew the attention of the Secret Service after he rallied support last weekend for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and said of the Obama administration: "We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November." His comments were made during a National Rifle Association meeting in St. Louis.
Nugent said on his website Thursday that he discussed the matter with two agents on Thursday while in Oklahoma.
"The meeting could not have gone better," he said. "I thanked them for their service, we shook hands and went about our business. God bless the good federal agents wherever they may be."
Nugent said he was just speaking figuratively and that he didn't threaten anyone's life or advocate violence.
"Metaphors needn't be explained to educated people," he said.
A Secret Service spokesman has said the issue has been resolved.
With hunting, Nugent has run afoul of the law before.
In August 2010, California revoked Nugent's deer hunting license after he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of deer-baiting and not having a properly signed tag.
Nugent's loss of that deer hunting license through June 2012 allows 34 other states to revoke the same privilege under the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact. Each state, however, can interpret and enforce the agreement differently.

What's you take on this Cuts...??  The Nuge thinks laws/regs only apply to other people....or he just caught caught up in the web...or dumb, or what??
.
..TM7

I think we should keep in mind that he's an entertainer by trade. His political beliefs interesect those of a lot of people, but not the majority.....a "fellow traveler". Oftimes backing fellow travelers and using them to forward ones goals can work, other times it can blow up in ones face!

As for his actions in this case, I can understand what probably happened to him, he got a major case of "buck fever" and screwed up big time! Stoopid of him (Hey Kimber, I did it again ;) ) but somewhat understandable. I've had it, almost anyone who ever hunted trophy game has had it......ya gotta control it, or don't hunt!!!!!!

I don't know much about him insofar as his entertainment career goes but I'll give a little credit for entering a guilty plea, he knows he screwed the pooch. But I don't give him a pass fer bein' stoopid! As a "fellow traveler" I understand that he brings a lot of attention to Second Amendment issues, but I'm not convinced that his efforts are entirely to our benefit.

Ted Nugent just seems like another attention seeking celebrity to me. He has brought a spotlight to some issues but I wonder if he doesn't do more harm than good with his antics.

I always thought he could get his pro gun message out better, without acting like a lunatic. Breaking game laws by killing an illegal bear, tells a bit more about his real character.

This sort of game violation can happen to men of good intentions. In your home state is it legal to shoot and wound a deer without notching a tag? I hunted with a group that showed up at the Canadian border wondering where they were supposed to buy the export permit, they forfeited the bear they had gotten.

Now I understand it is the hunters responsibility to understand all the regulations. I personally handed my buddy the bear hunting rules book and suggested he read them, even joked about messing up and living in Canadia rent free. ;D  He told me " I don't read all that crap, that is what I pay an outfitter for".

Uncle Ted messed up, the man can afford to have people explain the rules if he wanted. I would not even be surprised if it went down exactly as described. Now, he may have convinced himself it was a wound the bear had recovered from. This thought justified his "killing" one bear and simply cutting a second "no violation".  ;)

He has learned differently and will no doubt be spreading the word about Alaskan game laws. On balance I really don't think Ted is the shitbird many would have you believe. He certainly is a polarizing individual though.

I agree with Empty Quiver on this one.  The guy hunts all over the US and world.  How many places count "drawing blood" as filling your tag?  How many don't?  He made a mistake, fessed up to it and paid the fine.  It's done.

Although I agree with Teds pro gun messages. I think many times the way he says things makes anti gun people think gun owners are a bunch of wackos. If he wants to be a voice in our 2nd Amendment rights, he needs to use more of what is between his ears. It should start with obeying game laws. Being in the spotlight and speaking out for gun owners is a great asset, but when that same person breaks game laws it puts a huge damper on their message. I don't care if he said he is sorry a thousand times, or paid the fine a thousand times. He can't let things like this happen. Having a good character is very important when speaking for 2nd Amendment rights. Doing what he did, does say something about his character.

Ted is a lightening rod. You are absolutely correct in stating he needs to be cleaner than average.

I was a little surprised to see he was on the wrong side of a game law. Like I said he can afford to do this correctly with an attorney at his side in the field if need be. Uncle Ted may be a lot of things but he is not dumb.

Uncle Ted is our PETA. He is so absurdly in your face he cannot be ignored and that is his gift. I see no reason to not let him run with it.

I agree with that statement wholeheartedly.  Every cause needs a radical or two.  They make the powers "take pause" instead of thinking they can quietly run over people.  The "nice" and "reasonable" people don't have that effect on them.  Of course every cause needs those folks too.

I don't really care for uncle Teddy that much, but when you think about it...

Is he really that radical?  Or is he just saying what we are all thinking?
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

We could use another couple dozen Ted's. Although you may cringe at some of the things he says, he at least makes people think.  You need to fight far left with far right or the left will win eventually...

I thought the same thing.  How can a guy like this in the spotlight that is so pro America, pro hunting and pro gun do something this dumb? We may have all jumped to conclusions if what I heard Ted say is true.

I heard him speaking on the Glen Beck show about this and he said it was the Feds that brought up the charge and the Judge in the district was not even aware of this law.  He said the law went on the books around 2005 and he was the first and only person charged under this law.  Was he a target like when they sent the secret service to his house because they don't like what he believes and says?

My theory is that law abiding citizens will try to stay law abiding citizens and slob hunters will always be slob hunters.

I don't see a problem with this. He's ''manning up'', and taking responsibility for his actions. How many politicians can say this? How many guys,''hook up'', get a girl pregnant, and off they go. How many of you,me,us, can say we never break the law. Ever drive 40 in a 35mph zone?Fudge alittle on our tax's? Know every game law on the books, especially when in a different state. I didn't know here in Ohio, hunting crows in season, has to be on a Thursday,Friday,or Saturday. Birds sure don't know the difference between a Monday or a Thursday, but a game warden can. Don't thow stone's if you live in a glass house. gypsyman

I agree. We have some pretty complicated game laws here in Colorado but we don't have that law, if we did I think a lot of hunters, especially bow hunters, would be in violation. The difference is we don't all have everything we do captured on video. Of course that day may be coming.

It’s easy for Nugent’s critics to say, “He should have known what the game laws were in California and Alaska ahead of time.” Maybe, maybe not.

In too many cases today’s game laws are vague, can vary by township, county, and even which side of the highway you are on. Both of Nugent’s violations are classic examples of this, especially the Alaska incident, where the residents and guides didn’t know of the obscure law that got Nugent in trouble.

No person in the hunting world has defended sportsmen against the radical onslaught of the anti-hunting community as well as Nugent. No one in the hunting world has personally introduced hunting to more youngsters and wanna-be hunters than he has. No one in the hunting world has personally reached out to America’s veterans, through his music and hunting opportunities, as well he has. And to his credit he’s spent thousands of his own dollars to do all this.
What has scarred Nugent is that he has chosen to be in the limelight, and be more than willing to fight against those who want to take away our guns and hunting rights. Over the years he has chosen to pick a big fight with the liberal media. Because they detest anyone who would dare challenge their agenda, they use every trick in the book to come after and destroy their opponents.

In Nugent’s case the media knows that if they can destroy the messenger, they’ll destroy the message. The way the liberal media has spun half-truths into Nugent’s story is a classic example of how they operate and illustrates what all sportsmen are up against.

I suppose many of you would feel better if this were say Dave Watson on a soapbox. Who, you say? Dave Watson, formerly of country fame, Elvira oom pompa maw maw, has his own show, you know. Well he is so stinking invigorating I can't even remember his band. Nice enough man, no doubt he loves his hunting. But nobody hears his message unless you are part of the choir.

I think Rick59 is right. This was just an attempt to smear a person that is probably the loudest voice in favor of gun rights and hunting rights who is alive today.

Ted Nugent doesnt varnish his opinions for anyone. He is still alright with me.

I'm glad Ted is a fellow hunter and shooter. Sometimes, he's a fellow jerk, too. While it can be entertaining to bait and goad and pick fights, in polytics it doesn't do a whole lot of good, entertainment value aside.

I'd rather make some friends with good arguments.

On getting busted... sorry it happened to him. Some game wardens are absolute jerks, and I don't particularly care for the King's Agents telling me on what days I can shoot a doe, but I put up with it. Ted's got a lot more money to deal with stuff like that than I do. So he got popped on some minor thing... pay the fine, and move along, ignore the antis who'll try to use it to smear hunters, and hope Ted's more careful in the future.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Maybe I was a little to hard on old teddy but I have issues with that guy, I use to listen to his music and watch his hunting program and liked him so much I googled him one day and found his draft dodging record and read his own account how he did it, he said he didn't bathe or change his clothes and crapped in his pants every day for over a month so when he went in for his draft physical they just thought he was a crazy fool and let him go, and at the time of that interview he was proud of it. I have no use for a dirt bag like that! >:(
