I think the minnesota number is closer to about 30,000. I've lived in cities were immigrant populations had a very positive impact on the community, as with the Cubans in Miami. But I'm not seeing that from the Somalis. It seems to be more of a drag than a benefit. And has resulted in more of a ghetto structure than an assimilation structure.
How did it happen? A combination of two things: Volunteer organizations, like lutheran and catholic ministries; and a state with exceedingly generous welfare benefits for minorities.
I can see opening our doors to immigrants with the initiative and drive to find a way to make the trip, but just plopping a bunch of people somewhere seems like a bad idea. It reminds me of what happened with the American Indians.
